Adeline is a cathar from Innistrad who worked with the Dawnhart Coven to reverse the Eternal night.[1]

Description[ | ]

Adeline is a dark-skinned woman in white armor, with noble features, broad shoulders, and gentle eyes. Her voice is rich and resonant.

History[ | ]

Adeline was only twelve when the church took her in.[2] Today, she is an excellent tactician and an unyielding force on the battlefield. It came as no surprise when she was selected to lead a force of cathars during The Travails. However, to take up arms against Emrakul, she had to leave her family behind. A family of vampires took advantage of the chaos and abducted several townsfolk—including Adeline's younger brother. As soon as Emrakul was sealed away, Adeline started a personal crusade against the vampires. She desperately hopes to learn news about her brother but finds some comfort in destroying every vampire she encounters.[3]

Midnight Hunt[ | ]

Planning to use the Celestus to reverse the Eternal night, Katilda of the Dawnhart Coven recruited Arlinn Kord and the Gatewatch to find the Moonsilver Key.[1] Believing the Church of Avacyn might have stolen the key, Adeline joins Arlinn, Teferi, Kaya and Chandra Nalaar to investigate Thraben. Young Chandra quickly becomes smitten by Adeline's looks.[1]

Arlinn, Teferi, Kaya, Chandra, Adeline, and a group of cathars arrived in Thraben. They find the city destroyed and full of zombies; the army Liliana used against Emrakul. Kaya entered the city alone to scout the place. She found a clue in a book about the whereabouts of the Moonsilver Key. The Key should be in the possession of the Betzold family. Arlinn and Adeline knew a bishop of the Church of Avacyn with that last name. They locate bishop Worrin Betzold amid the ruins of a church. The group made their way through the zombies until they reach the bishop. Adeline on her horse went to the vanguard of the group, killing several zombies. Arlinn interrogated the zombie bishop and is given the name Dennick. The group moved to Gavony, where the family had a mansion. In the ruins of the mansion, they found the spirit of Dennick Betzold who tells the group the location of the Key. The key had been given by an ancestor of Dennick to Sorin Markov. At Markov Manor, Teferi and Arlinn waited with Sorin for the vampire to hand over the Key so they can help restore balance to Innistrad. The vampire refused and strikes Arlinn when she mentions Avacyn. The second time Sorin attacked, Sigarda appeared, answering a prayer made by the group before entering the Manor, and stopped the attack. The angel says that the Key is in Sorin's quarters and that she will stop the vampire giving the group a chance to get the Key.[4] In possession of the Key they returned to the Celestus. Upon their arrival, Tovolar began his attack on the Harvesttide festival. The witches' magical protections managed for a short period to deter the werewolves. When the protections finally failed, Teferi cast a spell that delays the sunset and consequently the transformation of the werewolves into their wolf forms. Then, the cathars led by Adeline, the planeswalkers, and witches started fighting the werewolves to defend the humans.[5] After the battle with Tovolar, Chandra and Adeline took Arlinn to the center of Celestus. There, the witches were finishing the ritual, but Olivia Voldaren appeared, interrupting the ritual and taking the Key with her. Thus, the Eternal Night began.[6]

Crimson Vow[ | ]

After the Harvesttide festival ritual failed, Adeline, along with a group of people from Innistrad and the planeswalkers Arlinn Kord, Chandra Nalaar (who she is getting close with), Teferi and Kaya, decided to help humans in distress across Innistrad. That is until Arlinn decided to return to Markov Manor and ask Sorin Markov for help. Adeline resisted going back there, but ended up agreeing and went with the group. In the crypt of the Manor, the group encountered Sorin who said that Olivia Voldaren "stole" his grandfather.[2] They formed a pact with Sorin and traveled together to the wedding of Olivia and Edgar Markov at the Voldaren estate. When they arrived, all but Sorin were forbidden entrance.[7]

Inside the castle, Sorin managed to disrupt the ceremony and attacked Olivia who dropped the Moonsilver Key. From it, Katilda’s spirit emerged and freed Sigarda who unleashed a blinding holy aura that shattered windows and broke the manor’s wards. Now free to advance, Teferi used his magic to hasten the entry of their foot soldiers and assisted Chandra in burning through the great doors to the manor, granting full entry to their forces.[8] Adeline and Chandra rode out together with the mounted cathars and began to dispense justice. During the fighting, Adeline saved Chandra from a falling column with the assistance of Teferi who slowed its fall. As the battle continued and with their forces spread thin, Tovolar and his wolves arrived to help. Emerging victorious and with the Moonsilver Key now secured, Teferi accelerated their journey back to the Celestus to complete the ritual. After the balance between night and day was restored, Arlinn observed Adeline and Chandra together, hidden away under a willow tree as they talked and embraced.[9]
