Akul was a scorpion dragon outlaw from Gastal, who relocated to Thunder Junction.[1] He was the leader of the Hellspurs.

Description[ | ]

Akul was a dragon with a scorpion-like appearance, bearing chitinous claws and a barbed, venomous stinger at the end of a tail that he could crack like a whip.[2][3] He had a scaled body with golden eyes and strange mandibles in front of two rows of razor-sharp teeth.[4][5] The scales on his chest glowed with internal thunder when he was enraged. His venom could kill a victim in seconds, and those that survived were left in pain for the rest of their lives.

History[ | ]

After the Freestriders robbed Akul and the Hellspurs, the scorpion dragon spent weeks tracking them down and killing those that got in his way.[4] When the remaining members relented and returned what they had stolen, Akul attacked them regardless, almost killing Annie Flash's nephew Tommy with his venom, inflicting pain that would last the rest of his life.

Akul and the Hellspurs sought the riches of Maag Taranau, the legendary treasure vault at the center of the plane. However, it took one key, split into six pieces, to open. He wasn't able to secure all of them, so he built the town of Tarnation around the vault to be controlled by his gang so that nobody else could try to enter.

Around 4563 AR, Akul and his gang attacked a carriage transport, killing a courier named Archie Dixon and two Sterling Company guards, to retrieve the final piece of the key to the vault that he was missing.[2] Unbeknownst to Akul, the key piece was not on the courier or in the stagecoach. When Akul realized the deception, he burned the carriage and bodies in a rage before leaving. He later received intel that the real key had been stolen from the Sterling Company's office by a fae shapeshifter.[3]

Akul would not have to look long for the shapeshifter, however, as Oko and his gang, including Annie, would come directly to Tarnation in an attempt to steal Akul's key pieces. They were captured by the Hellspurs, and Akul confronted them in prison, taking the final key piece for himself and completing the true key to Maag Taranau. However, before leaving them to their fate, Akul was challenged to a duel by Kellan, one of the thieves. With his honor at stake, Akul accepted.[4]

Akul had the upper hand in the duel and eventually pinned Kellan in a dangerous position, but they were interrupted when mercenaries from the Sterling Company, who had been tipped off by Oko before his arrival, attacked Tarnation. One of their thundershots broke the necklace on which Akul wore the key, and it was stolen by Oko. The Hellspurs were ultimately defeated by the Sterling mercenaries.[5] Nonetheless, Akul pursued Oko to the vault, leading the few remaining Hellspurs into a battle with Oko's gang, with Akul being defeated by Rakdos.[6] During the fight, Oko opened the vault for his benefactor, a disguised Jace Beleren. Jace took a piece of treasure from the vault, setting off a trap, and planeswalked away.

Oko's gang realized that payment and treasure were both unfeasible and attempted to escape before the vault's entrance collapsed.[6] Vindictive to the end, Akul reawakened and grabbed Annie to prevent her escape, but Kellan fully awoke his fae magic and submitted Akul to mind control, ordering him to walk into the vault and never leave. Shortly afterward, the vault shed the entire mountain that had grown around it and rocketed into the sky with Akul still inside. It later crashed back into the plane, scattering its contents and likely killing Akul.[7]
