Aminatou (Ah-mee-NAH-too[1]) is a young human wizard fateshifter and former planeswalker, from an undisclosed West African–inspired plane.[1]
Appearance and characteristics[ | ]
Aminatou's magic revolves around fate and the manipulation of destiny. She can perceive the matrix of fate and foresee the destinies of others.[2] Her power is limited to personal fates, she can't alter large events.[3] She follows disturbances and shifts she feels across the planes, sending her fate-shifting moths to other people in order to influence their destinies.[4]
Aminatou is playful and fickle. Her destiny is something she toys with daily; some days she'll grow up to be a singer, other days a powerful wizard, some days a trainer of beautiful beasts, and other days a conquering queen. She is young, but because of her powers, possesses the knowledge of a lifetime. The most striking feature of Aminatou is her calm demeanor.
Her magic is expressed through intangible moths. When one of her wisps of power lands on a person it nudges their fate in whatever direction Aminatou chooses. Aminatou has access to white, blue and black mana.
Fateshifters[ | ]
Aminatou can create fateshifter tokens, bursts of her power in physical form, that can be used to evade horrifying ends. The tokens are roughly carved figures, the size of a finger, shaped to give the vague impression of a person’s face and form. When someone makes a choice that would lead to their certain death, everyone nearby who holds a fateshifter will experience the outcome and then snap back to the moment before that person made the decision, giving them a chance to make it again. These visions last no more than a minute and only work once for any single person.[3][4]
History[ | ]
Her spark ignited at a young age, and for seemingly no reason at all, although if one were to ask her why it happened, she would tell them "because I foresaw it would one day, and I decided I didn't want to wait for that."
Aminatou lost her spark during the Desparkening.[3]
Duskmourn[ | ]
Aminatou traveled to Ravnica around 4564 AR to assist the retrieval team of Kaito Shizuki, Niko Aris, Tyvar Kell, the Wanderer, and Zimone Wola in recovering Nashi from Duskmourn.[3]
After the rescue party entered the door, Kaito returned to Ravnica alone via planeswalking, in a panic. Niv-Mizzet stopped him and questioned what had happened, prompting Kaito to explain that Jace had left him behind. Aminatou reassured Kaito that his spark was still intact and suggested that the House itself had rejected him. Proft then suggested he had an idea that might help, and Kaito, lacking other options, followed him to the workstations, aware that time was running out.[5]
Proft successfully created an artificial Omenpath to Duskmourn by using his mind magic in combination with Kaito’s spark, Aminatou’s abilities, and a piece of wood from the House that Kaito had provided.[6] Kaito and Proft then rescued Nashi, the Wanderer, Tyvar, Zimone, and Niko from the grasp of Valgavoth. Sometime later on Kamigawa, Kaito watched on with the Wanderer and Yoshimaru as Nashi told of their adventures to an enthralled group of children that included Aminatou.

Magic (BOOM! comic)[ | ]
This article or section discusses story elements that are canon only in the BOOM! comics. |
- Aminatou tells Isona Maive that her powers do not let her alter an individual's choices, only influence them, which is what makes using her powers so much fun.[7]
- Her moths are depicted as tangible. One is trapped in ice, and Chandra Nalaar incinerates it.[7]
- Aminatou knows one of her destinies is to become trapped in the Meditation Plane, and until recently, she had avoided going there.[8][9]
