Annie Flash, called Haseya by the Atiin, is a human rogue from an unknown plane who has ended up on Thunder Junction. She rides an animal named Fortune, and was part of Oko's gang.
Description[ | ]
Annie is a member of the nomadic Atiin people.[2] A veteran outlaw, she has tried to hang up her hat multiple times during her career, but keeps being dragged back into one last job. Her iris can shine golden with magically enhanced sight gifted by an angel, which allows her to see through illusions and project her senses to see miles away and from other perspectives.[3][4] She is the best sharpshooter on Thunder Junction.[5][6] Her left leg is weaker than her right, occasionally causing her to limp.[7] She once rode a bird, nearly breaking her neck and leaving her with a fear of flying.[6] She is a friend of fellow Atiin Stella Lee.
Annie generally wears her hair in braids, weaving a strand of beaded leather with pops of blue and white into each section. She wears a wide-brimmed hat and carries a satchel and a thunder rifle and knife tucked at her hip.[4] The fringe on her boots is beaded with bone and turquoise.[7]
She owns numerous palomino horses, but has a special connection to the horned creature Fortune.[4] Built like an eighteen-hand stallion, with a coat as red as clay and horns curled up from his skull, Fortune has dark eyes like twin canyons. He possesses human intelligence — though he lacks a sense of direction. Annie can summon him with a whistle, and he "slips through the air" to join her.[5]
History[ | ]
Before she traveled to Thunder Junction, Annie received a magic eye from an angel.[1]
Annie was once part of a criminal gang on Thunder Junction called the Freestriders.[4][8][9] After the gang robbed Akul and the Hellspurs, the scorpion dragon spent weeks tracking down the Freestriders and killing those that got in his way. When the remaining members relented and returned what they had stolen, Akul attacked them regardless, almost killing Annie's nephew Tommy with his venom, inflicting pain that would last the rest of his life. Feeling responsible for the incident, she took Tommy into her care and quit the gang, burying her thunder rifle in the backyard in case of emergency.
Annie settled on a ranch in the remote town of Saddlebrush. At one time, she rounded up a posse to defend the town from a rattlewurm. Tommy eventually decided to stop living with her and returned to the homeland of the Atiin, not feeling at home on Thunder Junction.[7]
Working with Oko[ | ]
A few months after Akul's reprisal, Annie was riding through the desert when she came across a stagecoach that had been destroyed by his gang.[9] She took a lockbox full of money from it and brought it back to her hometown. When arriving back at her ranch, she found that Oko was waiting for her on her front porch. He explained that he was putting together a team to steal something valuable from Akul, and had been looking for her because he knew that she held a grudge against the dragon. However, she turned him down at first, not wanting to get involved.[4]
Eventually, she decided to accede to Oko's request, worried about what might happen if she turned him down. She returned to the tavern where he told her he would wait if she changed her mind and joined his gang, meeting its other members. He informed her that the true aim of the heist was to rob Maag Taranau, the ancient vault at the plane's center. Annie disputed him since she believed it to be a myth, but Ashiok, the mastermind of the break-in, assured her that it was real and that Akul was almost in control of it. However, he lacked the key, which the gang planned to steal from Bertram Graywater, head of the Sterling Company. They would rob the Sterling Company headquarters and jailbreak their last two members, Kaervek and Satoru Umezawa, in one fell swoop.
While Oko would steal the key, he delegated the task of the jailbreak to Annie and Eriette. As they broke the ancient warlock and the ninja free from their cells, it occurred to Annie that the gang was rife with internal tensions, and the only thing stopping it from destroying itself was a common goal. Umezawa left to help Oko, while Annie, Eriette, and Kaervek got out through the way they came in.[5]
After securing the key, the next step of the heist lay in finding the location of the vault. Annie knew of a scholar named Nolan who studied ancient artifacts. The Sterling Company had contracted him to study the key, and the gang would do the same, but Vraska worried that the Sterling Company might imprison him until they were able to recover the key. Oko decided to kidnap him from the train he was riding into town on, heavily guarded by Sterling Company mercenaries. Annie acted as a lookout for the mission and also helped the newly joined Kellan save the civilians on the train before it crashed as a casualty of the plan.[10]
After the train heist, Ashiok extracted knowledge of the vault and the keys from Nolan's brain. While Oko dispatched Gisa and Geralf to find a map to the vault, Annie and Kellan rode Nolan from their camp in the wilderness back to a nearby town.[8] On the ride, Annie divulged some of her past to Kellan, revealing that while she didn't trust Oko and Ashiok with the contents of the vault, she trusted Akul even less. When the map was secured, Oko took Annie with him, alongside Kellan and Vraska, to infiltrate the Hellspurs' home base of Tarnation, which was built around Maag Taranau. However, thanks to a blunder by Kellan, the four were captured and brought before Akul, who took the final piece of the vault's key. The last chance at the plan's success came when Kellan challenged Akul to a duel, which the dragon was forced to accept to avoid losing face in front of his gang.
Annie, Oko, and Vraska were bound and brought to observe Kellan’s duel with Akul.[11] Outmatched and close to defeat, Kellan’s innate powers sprang to life, which placed Akul in a trance. Kellan attempted to strangle Akul, but his magic wavered at the thought of killing another being. Akul regained his senses and quickly overpowered Kellan, but before landing the killing blow; he was struck by thunder as Ral Zarek arrived with Sterling mercenaries, allowing Kellan to retreat and sending Tarnation into chaos. Concealed within Oko’s bone armor, Tinybones reassembled and unlocked their chains, allowing Vraska to turn their remaining captors to stone. Oko called out to Kellan for the key, which Akul had unknowingly lost in the mayhem. Kellan tossed the key to his father and attempted to join their escape but was knocked unconscious by a Sterling guard.
Annie pressed the others to return for Kellan in a nearby saloon, but Vraska and Oko resisted.[11] Oko revealed that he had anticipated their capture and secretly shared the location of Tarnation with Bertram Graywater. Although Kellan’s heroics were unexpected, Oko had counted on the arrival of the Sterling Company. Vraska expressed her displeasure for not having been in on the plan, and despite Annie’s desire to rescue Kellan, the group set out to unlock Maag Taranau before Akul and the Hellspurs caught up with them.
Oko's crew entered the vault, and Annie used her enhanced eyesight to search for traps.[6] She discovered a security grid that Umezawa and Tinybones deactivated. Further within, Kaervek worked to deactivate a protective ward when Akul and the Hellspurs suddenly arrived. Oko and his team distracted their attackers, allowing Kaervek to finish his work. As Vraska and Oko approached the treasure vault, Kellan and Ral Zarek intercepted them. Annie grazed Oko with a warning shot before he could subdue Kellan while Ral and Vraska fought. Kellan placed Oko into a trance and was about to grab the key when Ashiok — Jace Beleren in disguise — arrived and incapacitated Kellan, Annie, and Ral.
Kellan found Annie unconscious and injured just as the vault began to collapse.[6] Before Kellan and Annie could get away, Akul grabbed Annie. Kellan used his magic to control Akul's mind, sending the dragon into the collapsing vault and allowing Kellan and Annie to escape. Afterward, Kellan stayed at Annie's ranch to help with chores while waiting for Amalia's arrival.
