Baas is a one-armed ogre shaman and tattoo artist, part of the Ghor clan of Gruul.
Description[ | ]
Baas is a powerful ogre shaman with a distinctive appearance — her right arm is prosthetic, crafted from battle-boar tusks and equipped with various tools. Baas is covered in intricate shaman tattoos, which hint at her lineage steeped in heroism and might, though her presence also carries stories of cunning and unsung guerrilla tactics.
Baas possesses a resilient and determined personality, unyielding in her beliefs and actions. She has a reputation for wreaking havoc on Ravnica's infrastructure, including collapsing dams and bridges, and creating significant disruptions like the Tin Street Massacre, although the latter was done by her relative, Govan Radley. Despite her ferocity, she harbors a certain honor and loyalty, as seen in her conflicted relationship with Arrus, a viashino. Her interactions with Arrus reflect a pragmatic approach tempered with occasional insights into justice and the true nature of conflict in Ravnica.
History[ | ]
Baas used to be named "Baas Solvar Radley", but the infamy of the Radley name due to the Tin Street Massacre caused by her relative Govan Radley made her drop her last name, renaming herself "Baas Solar" using the name of her cyclops husband, Daeska Solvar. However, when she was released early from prison, and learned that Daeska had been unfaithful to her while she was behind bars, she left him and dropped his name too, becoming only "Baas".
Baas Solvar, initially thought by Ossett Weslyn to be a political prisoner, was revealed to have a notorious background tied to incidents like the Tin Street Massacre, a famous tale that is false. Despite this, Ossett arranged for Baas' release to gain crucial information about a spy within the Boros Legion.
The viashino Arrus later encountered Baas in her clan's camp where she worked as a tattoo artist and shaman. Their initial meeting was tense, leading to a scuffle over ink, during which Baas demonstrated her formidable skills and knowledge of Selesnyan healing magic and its properties as tattoo ink infusion.
After their encounter, Arrus and Baas embarked on a journey together. They ventured into Selesnyan territory in search of ingredients for Baas's special ink, which possessed potent healing properties. During this quest, Arrus learned of Baas's reputation for causing significant disruptions across Ravnica, including collapsing dams and causing mass chaos spells.
Arrus discovered Selesnya's secret project to use accelerated growth magic to create an impenetrable barrier between the Rubblebelt and Selesnyan territory. This discovery fueled Arrus's resolve to challenge leadership within his clan and rally his people against Selesnya's manipulation.
