Brenalt is a general on Shandalar who made an Angelic Accord.

History[ | ]

Brenalt and his fellow soldiers fought a horde of undead and were badly outnumbered. One by one, his friends fell before the onslaught. Tomas, Edrick, and Stanton, Brenalt's best friends, were all killed, and Mattias did not fare much better, slowly bleeding out beside him. He asked for water, which Brenalt gave him, and then he told Brenalt to run home and save himself before he perished.

They were in a ruined shrine, long abandoned. But an altar remained, largely intact, and a shaft of moonlight shone down on it from above. Brenalt limped over to it, and knelt, sending out a wordless prayer. It was a simple expression of fear, hope, and need, but it was enough, and he felt the wind change and an angel appeared before him. He pleaded with her to save him, and she nodded. He felt the Angelic Accord seal within him.

Later, as he lay wounded on a hospital bed, Brenalt was visited by a Banisher Priest, an inquisitor who accused him of making a deal with dark powers to explain why he was the only survivor from his entire band of soldiers. Brenalt admitted he had made a deal but with an angel, not a demon. Relieved, the priest remarked that it had been long since the last visit from an angel.

After knowledge of his pact spread, Brenalt quickly rose through the ranks. Within weeks, he had been promoted to Captain, and after four years and a series of improbable victories, he had become a General. Everyone he worked with treated him with a certain reverence, and no matter how bad a battle got, Brenalt managed to emerge victorious each time. Those victories were relative, however. The horde of undead could be destroyed, but there never seemed to be an end to them, and no leader of the enemy had been identified.

A scout burst into Brenalt's war council and the loss of the Fourth Legion, as well as both Greenfield and Brenalt's home of River's Glen. Another General, Elise, commented that refugees from Greenfield would put a lot of pressure on the Eastern Tower and divert some supplies there. Brenalt could only mourn the loss of his home.

Later, Brenalt hobbled to the top of a ridge on his wounded leg to look out at a teeming mass of the dead and finally spotted the Xathrid necromancer in charge. His army had been decimated, his leg crushed, and his home had fallen, and he had no more hope in the world. His despair turned to rage, and he looked to the heavens and screamed. He had been at war with the undead for eight years, and this would be his last stand. He only had a handful of refugees in his care now, and their heads were all bowed in prayer. He felt his rage and despair fade, replaced by a sad resignation. Whether it was out of mockery, respect, or desperation, he bowed his head with the remnants of his people. And then he felt it again - the change of the wind. The angel had returned to save them all in their darkest hour, just as she had before.
