Brick counters are a type of counter introduced in Amonkhet. They are created by and placed on a cycle of artifacts known as monuments that were made to represent the constant monument-building that went on in ancient Egypt.[1][2] They act as a resource, granting the artifact a stronger ability after it builds up the counters via using its weaker ability. They were represented on punch cards in the Amonkhet block.

AKH Punch card

Punch card with brick counters

Brick counters first appeared on a cycle of four artifacts in Amonkhet known as monuments. Each monument is an artifact with two tap abilities, one of which has a minor effect and adds brick counters, and the other is a more powerful version that requires having three brick counters to activate:

  • Edifice of Authority can prevent a creature from attacking for a turn. The upgraded ability will prevent a creature from attacking, blocking, or using abilities for a turn. Both cost {1}
  • Luxa River Shrine gains one life for {1}, while the upgraded ability gains two life for no mana.
  • Oracle's Vault has the ability to exile the top card of the player's library for {2}, allowing them to play it during that turn. The upgraded ability costs zero and the card can be cast without paying its mana cost.
  • Pyramid of the Pantheon filters {2} into any colored mana. The upgraded ability creates three mana of one color.

Hour of Devastation introduced Sunset Pyramid as a fifth monument that uses brick counters. Both tap abilities cost {2} to activate. Instead of generating counters with its ability, it enters with three counters and removes them to draw a card. Once depleted, the downgraded ability is to Scry 1.

Trivia[ | ]

In Magic Online, the counter is colored green as it is considered a positive effect and they share an icon with Cage and Tower counters.[3]
