Description[ | ]
Cheyne was the foster son of Javin. He had piercing blue eyes a thatch of dark blond hair and wore a broad-rimmed hat when digging in the desert, and a kaffiyeh when wandering the streets of New Sumifa. Through some magic he did know the source of, he was unable to see his reflection, seeing only a blurred image when looking into any mirror or reflective surface. Cheyne was "more than twenty" at the time of the rediscovery of old Sumifa (3050 AR or 15 CE). He was a good artist with a pencil, deadly accurate with a throwing dagger, and better than most with a sword.[1]
History[ | ]
At 10 years of age, Cheyne and his family's caravans were apparent victims of an orc attack that killed everyone but Cheyne. He remembered nothing from before the attack, save his first name. Raised by his foster father Javin after the attack, Cheyne joined him on his journey from Argivia to Almaaz to recover the buried city of Sumifa.
At 21 years of age, Cheyne's drawing skills helped map out the ruins and he got on well with the crew, becoming friends with the foreman, Muni. After finding the buried house of Samor, he picked up a totem with strange runes carved into it from the corpse of the shopkeeper Kalkuk. The totem's runes matched the amulet Cheyne wore, intriguing him.[1]
After finding the Holy Book of the Confessors Javin was looking for, Cheyne snuck out of the digsite without informing his foster father and traveled back to Sumifa in a bid to discover his last name. Cheyne recruited the songmage Ogwater Rifkin as a guide, and they were joined by cartographer Claria, traveling together through the orc kingdom of Wyrvil, the River Kingdom of the selkies, and into the elven forest of Sarraza. After Javin nearly died from a scorpion sting, Cheyne realized his need for a last name was now out shadowed by his love of his foster father, and abandoned his quest, instead arranging for Javin to be healed by the elves. While Ogwater released and banished the Beast of the Hours, Cheyne rescued Claria from the destruction in the valley of the Chimes, and they realized they had fallen in love with each other.[1]
