The Coiled One is a powerful, mysterious, and ancient snake god "of venom and vengeance" [1] from Innistrad associated with dark magic. It appears to embody darkness and chaos, capable of exerting control and influence through serpentine symbols and artifacts, such as the mask Sinnia found. The Coiled One's presence is oppressive and tangible, affecting the environment and those around it.
History[ | ]
Leinore and her sister Sinnia discovered a charred snake in the ashes of an old campfire. When Leinore picked it up, the snake briefly came to life before going still again. Later, they found a mysterious mask, adorned with snake-like features, which Sinnia took despite Leinore's unease.
As the Harvesttide festival continued, strange events unfolded. People began to go missing, and Sinnia's behavior changed drastically. Wearing the mask, she gained an unsettling power over the townsfolk, who started to regard her as a savior. She performed disturbing miracles, such as causing people to cough up live snakes, which the villagers bizarrely celebrated.
Leinore became increasingly alarmed by her sister's transformation and the growing influence of the Coiled One. She followed Sinnia one night and discovered her sister feeding an unconscious man to a giant, glowing egg in a forest clearing, revealing a dark ritual.
The witch Katilda confronted Leinore and explained that Sinnia was under the mask's control, which was a conduit for Saryth, the Viper's Fang. Saryth had been using the townsfolk to feed the Coiled One, an entity meant to bring light but at a terrible cost.
The ground began to tremble and split open, indicating the Coiled One's imminent emergence. As the situation became dire, Katilda and Leinore had to face the terrifying reality that their world was on the brink of destruction due to Saryth's and the Coiled One's machinations. As the earth quaked and a massive serpent-like creature emerged from a chasm, Katilda and Saryth battled, causing further destruction.
Leinore, despite her fear and the trembling ground beneath her, was determined to save her sister. Katilda, injured and desperate, explained that Sinnia could only be freed if the mask was destroyed, even though she doubted Sinnia’s survival. Leinore fought her way through the chaos to reach Sinnia, who was almost fully consumed by the mask's influence. In a moment of intense struggle, Leinore managed to remove the mask, freeing Sinnia from its control just as the Coiled One prepared to devour them both.
With the mask destroyed, and Saryth and the Coiled One gone into the earth, Leinore and Sinnia returned to the settlement with Katilda. The festivalgoers were guided back to safety, seemingly unaffected by the night's horrors. Although the night’s events remained a haunting memory for Leinore and Sinnia, the threat had passed, leaving only faint echoes of the monstrous presence that once terrorized them.
