The College of Lat-Nam was a school of magic and wizardry founded by Drafna and Hurkyl on the island of Lat-Nam (Dominaria). It was destroyed in the Fall of the College of Lat-Nam during the Brothers' War.

History[ | ]

On Terisiare, magic had not seen prominent usage in some time. Scholarly study on the subject was also very limited. The founders of the college, the married couple Drafna and Hurkyl, hoped to change that by collecting as much knowledge as possible on the arcane arts. The College of Lat-Nam quickly became a place for the few practitioners of magic to congregate and share their information. The Library of Lat-Nam contained many tomes on the study of magic.

Wishing to stay neutral in the war, Drafna and Hurkyl traveled to Terisia City and met with the Archimandrite of the Ivory Tower, and together with the Brotherhood of Gix, they created the Union of the Third Path, which sought neutrality in the Brothers' War, siding neither with Urza nor Mishra. The Third Path, and many of the college's mages, Hurkyl among them, stayed in Terisia City until The Fall of Terisia City. After that event, many Third Path scholars, wizards, and artifacts traveled west to Lat-Nam to seek refuge from the war, but at some point, the war followed them.

Many of the college's sages were killed or eliminated as threats during the Brothers' War and, the school itself was destroyed by the Brothers at some point during the war.[1] The Fall of the College of Lat-Nam is little described, but it has been mentioned that the college was visited by "terrible retribution"[2], that it was "laid to waste"[3], and that "all the knowledge of Lat-Nam could not protect its sages".[4]

Surviving Third Path members of the college, including Drafna, later founded the City of Shadows on the nearby island of Iwset. Some of the sages traveled as far as to Otaria to create the Institute of Arcane Study on Tamingazin, and much later, during the Ice Age, the School of the Unseen also inherited knowledge that originally stemmed from the College of Lat-Nam,[5][6] which in turn was passed to the Tolarian Academy.
