Contested counter are a type of counter introduced in New Capenna Commander that allow for the change of ownership of lands among the players whenever one is dealt damage.

Description[ | ]

Contested counters first appeared on Turf War in New Capenna Commander. This enchantment adds a contested counter on one land controlled by each player. Then, if a creature deals combat damage to a player who controls a land(s) with contested counters, the attacking creature's controller can steal one of those lands. These counters simulate gang fighting over a given piece of land and allow for them to shift control throughout the game whenever a player is damaged.
