These counters modify the power and toughness of a creature. Only the +1/+1 and the -1/-1 counter are still in use and can annihilate each other.

The first ability to give keyword counters was printed first introduced in the Mystery Booster set on the test card Recycla-bird.[2] Ikoria: Lair of Behemoths was the first standard legal set to use the mechanic.[3]

The evergreen keyword abilities deathtouch, double strike, first strike, flying, haste, hexproof, indestructible, lifelink, menace, reach, trample, and vigilance each have their own counter. Shadow and exalted are the only non-evergreen ability to have keyword counters. Permanents with a keyword counter on them, typically creatures, gain that counter's respective ability.
