The Death Pits of Rath were a series of chambers filled with an oily black, semi-sentient substance separating the Furnaces of Rath from the Stronghold itself.[1] During the Weatherlight 's incursion into the Stronghold, the Death Pits were one of the many hurdles the crew had to surpass to reach their captain, Sisay.
History[ | ]
When pressure from the Furnace created fissures in the walls of the complex, Rath's evincars found this to be a growing security concern.[2] Seeking to seal the holes, evincars would send a byproduct of the flowstone creation process to fill them. Like flowstone, the black substance responded to the evincars' will, and could be effectively deployed to clear tunnels.
An unexpected consequence of this process was that when living beings were dissolved in the black substance, their memories and life forces were also absorbed.[2] As a result, these Death Pits developed a primitive predatory consciousness and a cruel playfulness toward prey. Taking indigestible bones, armor, weapons, and any other leftovers, the Death Pits recombined these bits and pieces into undead-like puppets known as Carrionettes. Manipulating these "bodies" through long tendrils, it attacked intruders via swordplay, hand-to-hand combat, and other strangely mimetic methods. Once the victims were subdued, the Carrionettes grabbed on and took them back to the main body of ooze. If a thin tendril was cut in battle, the reanimated corpse would collapse into a black, watery mess.
