oracle:"Defense counter"

Defense counters are counters that are used to track the defense of battles. They were introduced in March of the Machine.[1]

Description[ | ]

Defense counters are exclusively connected to battle cards and represent how much damage attacking players need to win the battle. Battles enter play with the number of defense counters printed on their card. They lose defense counters corresponding to damage dealt to them.

Rules[ | ]

From the Comprehensive Rules (September 20, 2024—Duskmourn: House of Horror)

  • 122.1g The number of defense counters on a battle on the battlefield indicates how much defense it has. A battle with 0 defense is put into its owner’s graveyard if it isn’t the source of an ability that has triggered but not yet left the stack. This state-based action doesn’t use the stack. See rule 704.

Trivia[ | ]

  • In Magic Online, the counter is colored green as it's considered a positive effect.
