Draco was a powerful artifact dragon that appeared on Dominaria during the first Phyrexian invasion. It is not known what Draco is or originally was, but the artwork suggests that it might have been a natural dragon (instead of a pure artificial construct) that was later modified by the Phyrexians with certain metallic parts,[1]. Despite this, it is not itself defined as a Phyrexian creature, and neither is its scion.

About the card[ | ]

In Planeshift, which had many low-key cards, it was one of the most flashy cards. It was also used as key art for the set.

Draco has the highest mana total among tournament legal Magic cards (the highest acorn card is Gleemax), and there are combos that took advantage of this (e.g. "Draco Explosion" with Erratic Explosion). A 9/9 flying creature for 6 mana at maximum and no upkeep cost is, of course, powerful, so if you ignored its weakness to removal, you could set it as a Domain finisher. It wouldn't be strange if it came out around turn 5 after mana acceleration. Many fan decks at the time used this.

For a long time since the beginning of Momir Basic, it has been the only creature that can be reliably summoned in the format, until the introduction of Emrakul, the Promised End.

In Modern Horizons 2, Scion of Draco appeared as a remake. Smaller in size but has no upkeep cost and grants allies keyword abilities.
