The Brothers' War

The sage Drafna was the co-founder and leader of the College of Lat-Nam on Terisiare during the Brothers' War of Dominaria. He and his wife also participated in the Union of the Third Path and afterward counted as two of its founders. The Third Path would overtake Lat-Nam as Drafna's main focus afterward.

Description[ | ]

The College of Lat-Nam had a problem with lice, and so when they arrived at Terisia City, both Hurkyl and Drafna were fully shaved bald. However, as the years went on in Terisia City, they let their hair grow out, although Drafna was balding slightly anyway.[2]

Drafna was far more talkative than his wife, and was quite contrary, often disagreeing with whatever the majority seemed to prefer, but always deferring to Hurkyl when she disagreed with him in a discussion. If it had not been for Hurkyl, Drafna would have left the Third Path in its earliest days for all the disagreements he had with the others.[2]

Drafna was frequently confused by many things like which door in the Ivory Tower would lead where, but his skills with artifacts were legendary. He could postulate an entire artifact from the merest scraps and was rarely incorrect in his assessment. His desire to understand artifacts reminded Loran of Urza in his youth. Although Hurkyl never returned to Lat-Nam, Drafna traveled back and forth between Terisia City and the island numerous times. [2]

Unlike his wife and former student, Drafna's skill in magic was limited. Many of the spells and discoveries later attributed to Drafna were the work of Hurkyl. Drafna's tendency to talk drew much attention to him, and away from her, and it was often Drafna who relayed Hurkyl's finds to others, creating the effect of her attributions falling to him.[3][2]

Drafna was present for the Fall of Terisia City, when his wife Hurkyl died after unsummoning three dragon engines. A grieving Drafna took charge of the defenses, ordering any remaining artifacts to be shuttled out of the city through its secret tunnels, while Loran and Drafna's rival Feldon secretly smuggled the Golgothian Sylex out a different way.[2]

Drafna survived the fall of Terisia City and returned to the College of Lat-Nam. However, even on the island, his works were not safe from the Brothers' War. In an act of "terrible retribution"[4], the college too was destroyed, likely by Mishra as revenge for Terisiare not having given up its artifacts to him.[5]

Once again, Drafna survived, and his quest for a magic school would not be deterred. Along with other surviving members of the Third Path, he founded yet another school of magic, whose directive was to stay hidden from the world. This would be the City of Shadows, located on the smaller island of Iwset in the strait of Lat-Nam. Much effort was put into hiding the city from unwelcome eyes, and these efforts paid off. The City of Shadows survived through the Dark Age unscathed, and only had to be abandoned when the glaciers of the Ice Age plowed through eastern Lat-Nam. Even so, Drafna's legacy lived on for millennia after his lifetime, with the School of the Unseen and Tolarian Academy inheriting the spirit and body of the Third Path's works.[5]
