Dragonhawk, also called the Storm Hawk, is an anomaly on the plane of Bloomburrow - a being that behaves much like a Calamity Beast, but is neither truly from the plane nor an elemental creature.
Description[ | ]
Dragonhawk was born from a dragonstorm - a phenomenon previously unique to the plane of Tarkir. To the animalfolk of Bloomburrow, Dragonhawk is enormous, a dangerous new foe in the skies that causes both fear and confusion. Hovering ominously in the sky, it is a creature unlike any other in Bloomburrow. It combines the grace of a bird with the ferocity of a dragon, its massive form covered in mud-colored feathers with striking white primaries and secondaries. Its four wings, webbed like those of batfolk, flap with immense power, and a crest on its head resemble those of the lizardfolk. The beast's talons, sharp and deadly, look capable of carrying off even the largest of Bloomburrow's inhabitants.[1]
“ | There are no words in Valley to describe this new Calamity. It might not even be one at all. It brings storms with it, though nothing resembling the storms of Valley. It tears through the sky with no rhyme or reason, no sense of purpose. One moment it is there, the next, gone with a thunderclap. Is it from beyond the Brambles, or somewhere farther beyond? In my journeys, I have heard of a plane of great fiery beasts, ruled by tooth and claw. Perhaps this Calamity is from there, transformed as it entered the Omenpath. I am somehow less worried about the creature itself and more concerned with the storms in its wake. | ” |
History[ | ]
Helga first had a vision of Dragonhawk while in Pondside around 4564 AR.[3] Mabel's party later came upon it in the dandelion fields.[1] As the creature circled above, purple lightning crackled across its body, illuminating its fearsome presence. The animalfolk moved cautiously, hiding anything that might catch the creature’s eye. Their quiet journey was abruptly disrupted when Zoraline sneezed awake, alerting Dragonhawk to their presence. Ral Zarek immediately recognized the creature as a dragon, something the native animalfolk had never heard about before.
The creature's reaction was immediate and terrifying.[1] It opened its beak, revealing a forked purple tongue, and let out a deafening roar as it swooped toward them. Mabel and her companions scattered, narrowly avoiding Dragonhawk's deadly talons. As the storm intensified, Ral prepared to harness its power. With Finneas providing a well-aimed arrow wound with copper wire, Ral called upon his magic to strike the Dragonhawk with a barrage of lightning.
Despite the ferocity of Ral’s attack, the Dragonhawk did not fall.[1] Instead, it roared in anger, eyes sparking wildly before retreating into the storm clouds. The animalfolk took the opportunity to flee towards the safety of the foothills, with Mabel ensuring that everyone remained together. Dragonhawk later returned to attack the party in Fountainport, but was defeated by Maha and fled.[4]
Trivia[ | ]
- Although Ral did not identify it as such, Dragonhawk's appearance strongly resembles dragons of Kolaghan's brood from Tarkir, indicating that a Kolaghan dragonstorm may have birthed it.
