Egg counters are a type of counter introduced in Dominaria. They have been used to represent some form of birth or rebirth of a creature.
Description[ | ]
Egg counters first appeared on Darigaaz Reincarnated in Dominaria. They are created on the creature when it dies and is exiled per its ability. The counters then act as an upkeep tracker with one being removed each turn allowing the creature to return to the battlefield once they are all removed. In this instance, the counters are used to represent Darigaaz's ability to reincarnate.
The counters appeared again with a different effect on Xira, the Golden Sting in Dominaria United Commander Decks. In this case, an egg counter is put on a creature whenever Xira attacks. Then if a creature with one of the counters dies it causes an Insect creature token to be created. This represents Xira planting Insect eggs in another creature.
Alchemy: Dominaria brought the return of Egg counters on Darigaaz, Shivan Champion. Similar to their first appearance, they are created on a creature in exiled, then act as an upkeep tracker with one being removed each turn. In this instance, the counters are used to represent Darigaaz's ability to create a new Dragon brood.
Trivia[ | ]
- In Magic Online, the counter is colored green as its considered a positive effect and it shares an icon with Hatchling, Hoofprint, Incarnation, Prey and Shell counters.[1]
