A block is a set of three story-based editions, typically beginning with a large expansion and followed by two small expansions.

Modern block design began with in 1997 with Mirage block while Ice Age and Alliances were grouped together with Homelands as a block retroactively. (Because Homelands has no themes in common with and is not part of the same storyline as Ice Age and Alliances, it was later removed and replaced with Coldsnap.)

This practice still continues today; in general, every 12 months a new block is released. Lorwyn and Shadowmoor blocks are 6 months apart.

Below is a chronological list of Magic blocks (earliest first):

  • Ice Age (block)
  • Mirage (block)
  • Tempest (block)
  • Urza's (block)
  • Masques (block)
  • Invasion (block)
  • Odyssey (block)
  • Onslaught (block)
  • Mirrodin (block)
  • Kamigawa (block)
  • Ravnica (block)
  • Time Spiral (block)
  • Lorwyn (block)
  • Shadowmoor (block)
