The Fall of the College of Lat-Nam was a little-described event in the Brothers' War that left the College of Lat-Nam, the very first school of magic on Terisiare, in ruins.

History[ | ]

After the fall of Terisia City in 45 AR, several of its Third Path scholars fled west to the island of Lat-Nam, where Drafna and Hurkyl had established the College of Lat-Nam many years earlier. Hurkyl and Drafna had left the island in 33 AR to participate in the Union of the Third Path, and while Hurkyl never returned from Terisia City, Drafna had gone on numerous trips between the college and the city in the dozen years the two schools existed in parallel. [1]

Mishra set his eyes on Terisia City and eventually caused its downfall after months of siege, but the Third Path had smuggled scholars, wizards, and artifacts out through secret tunnels in the meantime, which meant that the College of Lat-Nam received its fair share of fleeing mages carrying old relics toward the end of its existence. The infamous Golgothian Sylex traveled with Loran elsewhere, however, and was never on Lat-Nam. [1]

When Terisia City finally fell, Hurkyl was among those who were killed, while Drafna spent great efforts removing the last valuable artifacts from the city and survived its fall. He returned to the College with these relics, leaving only books and scrolls for Mishra to find. Completely uninterested in magic, Mishra was enraged at having been foiled in this way.[1]

It is not known precisely when the College was attacked, but its location was not secret, and the brothers had war machines that could cross water. The details around the actual fall of the college are very sparse, but it had been said that it was visited by "terrible retribution"[3], that it was "laid to waste"[4], and that "all the knowledge of Lat-Nam could not protect its sages".[5] For 4000 years, the site of the former college would remain a poisoned glass desert, until its eventual purification by the wizard Greensleeves.[6][7]

Notably, though, not all of the sages of Lat-Nam died in the fall of the college. Drafna and others of the Third Path survived and crossed the Lat-Nam straits with the remains of their relics and sorcerous knowledge. They found the City of Shadows in some unnamed mountains near the western shore of Terisiare at the onset of the Dark Age, and established their new school of magic there, making certain its location would be kept secret and hidden from prying eyes.[2][8]
