Forage is a keyword action introduced in Bloomburrow.[1] It can be used as an additional cost.

Description[ | ]

To forage, either exile three cards from your graveyard or sacrifice a Food.[2]

Note that you can't sacrifice a Food to both forage and for its own ability to gain life. If an ability triggers “whenever you forage,” it's looking specifically for the instruction to forage. If you just exile three cards from your graveyard or sacrifice a Food for other reasons, you haven't foraged.

In Bloomburow, foraging is a Squirrel-related mechanic.

Rules[ | ]

From the glossary of the Comprehensive Rules (July 30, 2024—Bloomburrow)

Forage
To pay a cost of exiling three cards from your graveyard or sacrificing a Food. See rule 701.59, “Forage.”

From the Comprehensive Rules (July 30, 2024—Bloomburrow)

  • 701.59. Forage
    • 701.59a To forage means “Exile three cards from your graveyard or sacrifice a Food.”

Rulings[ | ]

  • If you don't have enough cards in your graveyard or a Food on the battlefield, you can't choose to forage.
  • Once you announce that you're casting a spell or activating an ability, players can't take actions until you've finished doing so. Notably, opponents can't try to remove cards from your graveyard or Foods you control to stop you from foraging.[3]

Example[ | ]

Example

Osteomancer Adept {1}{B}
Creature — Squirrel Warlock
2/2
Deathtouch
{T}: Until end of turn, you may cast creature spells from your graveyard by foraging in addition to paying their other costs. If you cast a spell this way, that creature enters with a finality counter on it. (To forage, exile three cards from your graveyard or sacrifice a Food. If a creature with a finality counter on it would die, exile it instead.)
