Description[ | ]
This article or section discusses story elements that are not canonical. |
Gallifrey (translation: "They that walk in the shadows") is the home planet of the Time Lords and the origin of the TARDIS. The main population center of the planet was simply known as the Capitol or the Citadel. It stood in the mountains of Solace and Solitude on the continent of Wild Endeavour. The great city was said to be built over a great caldera within which time had special properties, a kind of "null-zone" at the center of the meta-structure of history. The entire city was enclosed by the giant glass Capitol Dome resting on a large, vertical beam, with a wheel-like structure securing it while it overlooked other complexes on a lower level.
A barn where The Doctor spent some time as a child is in a desert on the planet, and is where The War Doctor planned to use The Moment to end the Last Great Time War. Instead, the planet was saved with the contributions of thirteen different Doctors.
The First Doctor and Susan Foreman stole their TARDIS from a bay on the planet. Their exact choice of which to steal was influenced by a fragment of Clara Oswald.
Later, when The Master rediscovered the planet, he destroyed it in anger over the secrets they had held about The Doctor's origins, and briefly trapped the Thirteenth Doctor in The Matrix, a Gallifreyan supercomputer.
