King Glarb, also referred to as His Moistness, is a frogfolk from Bloomburrow. He is king of the frogfolk and a powerful wizard.[1]
Description[ | ]
Glarb wears a silk robe and carries a staff.[2] The most famous augur in Valley, he is an experienced weaver, using water and ice magic in combat.[3]
History[ | ]
Glarb gently ruled the city of Fountainport from his throne atop its many tiers.[3] He wasn't always the schemer he is now but was once a mentor to those who would study augury. He ran a great school for those who wanted to herald the seasons and guide the future of Valley toward prosperity. Glarb became famous for not only his knowledge but also his consideration of the cycles and seasons that gave Valley life. During this time, Glarb briefly taught weaving to Helga, but it ended poorly due to her absentmindedness.[1] While practicing magic, she knocked the king's staff loose, caused him to hit himself attempting to recover it, and dropped it on his head, breaking the staff and giving him a concussion.[2]
Visions of Valley's destruction at the paws and talons of Calamity Beasts haunted Glarb's dreams for many seasons, worsening his demeanor and shaking his psyche.[3] Eventually, unwilling to let his home fall victim to the perils he foresaw, he concocted a scheme with the help of the weasel mercenary Cruelclaw to steal Maha's egg around 4564 AR. He intended to raise the infant Calamity Beast as the protector of Valley, certain that any consequences could not match the devastation seen in his visions.[2]
However, the theft of the egg caused an unprecedented rampage by Maha and the other Calamity Beasts. Investigating the rise of the Calamity Beasts, Mabel's party was able to secure an audience with Glarb. However, the king revealed that he himself was the one responsible for the Calamities' ire. He summoned Cruelclaw to dispose of Mabel's party, but their fight was interrupted by the appearance of Maha itself. Mabel soothed the beast's wrath by returning its egg, saving the plane from the wrath of the Calamities.
Glarb escaped after the fight between him and Mabel’s party, and fled Fountainport. City officials promised investigation and justice.
