Goat is a red creature type used for cards that depict various hollow-horned, bearded ruminant mammals living in mountainous areas and their domesticated relatives that are raised for wool, milk, and meat.

History

The first creature to bear the type was Mountain Goat in Ice Age. It was then redone in Portal Three Kingdoms as Zodiac Goat a couple of years later.

When Lorwyn was released, it featured the changeling mechanic. It also featured Goatnapper, but no Goat cards. The joke was that because of Mountain Goat and Zodiac Goat, Goat was a supported creature type, so Goatnapper affected all the creatures with changeling.[1] With the Grand Creature Type Update, four previous Beasts were errated to Goat Beasts, bringing the total to six Goats. Later in the block, Eventide featured Springjack Shepherd, which made 0/1 Goat tokens. Since then, 0/1 white creature tokens started becoming Goats.

Sixteen years after the last printed Goat, Pathbreaker Ibex made Goat an occasional creature type, taking it out of mono-red and into green and white.

Storyline

Dominaria

From Dominaria several Goat Beasts are known. The Wild Colos from Keld is sometimes used as a steed, but can only be trained as a young animal. The Crested Craghorn is indigenous to Otaria. It is said that Craghorns experience a wide range of emotions: "rage, fury, anger . . .". Their skeletons can be found all over Skirk Ridge, tangled in each other's horns.

Lorwyn

Springjacks are small grazing animals native to the plane of Lorwyn.[2] They have slightly curving horns, shaggy wool, and four-clawed paws. Kithkin keep springjacks for use as mounts, as well as for their milk, mutton, and wool. Those who tend flocks of springjacks are known as jackherds. Goblin Goatnappers steal Kith goats for practice. The real prize, of course, is a giant's giant winged Cloudgoat.[3]

Tarkir

The Abzan Houses of Tarkir use large Ibex (wild goats) as mounts and draught animals. They also provide good wool.[4]
