Her unwavering belief in Serra and her extensive responsibilities as an abbey matron positioned her as a key figure in maintaining the community's spiritual and social fabric. Despite Serra's prolonged absence (due to her death, which was unknown in Ulgrotha), Gulsen firmly believed in Serra's lingering influence and protection, as seen in her conviction that the abbey gargoyles still watched over the city.[1]
Gulsen's hope and optimism were evident in her frequent references to Serra’s eventual return, which she believed would bring salvation and order. Gulsen’s responsibilities as an abbey matron were extensive, including enforcing laws, settling disputes, and ensuring the well-being of the community. Her role in bureaucratic councils and daily governance highlighted her significant influence.[2]
