Hajar was a Fallaji nomad on Dominaria, son of his tribe's chieftain.
Description[ | ]
Among the Fallaji, Hajar was counted as a traditionalist, one who held a deep respect for the spirits of the Thran. He believed in genies, ghouls, and the great dragons, the mak fawas, that haunted the night. He was described as being close to Mishra in age. He was thin and wiry and had a narrow face.[1]
History[ | ]
Hajar worked as the assistant to the dig site leader Ahmahl at Tocasia's dig site in 16 AR. By 20 AR, he had dreams of becoming a great warrior of the Suwwardi.[1]
Having followed his dream and joined the Suwwardi, Hajar by chance discovered that Mishra had been taken hostage and was working as a rakiq (slave). Hajar talked to the Qadir, who agreed to instead set Mishra into service as tutor to the Qadir's son, though he remained a rakiq. Hajar's fate thus became entwined with Mishra's, and over time, he turned into Mishra's bodyguard. Hajar remained loyal to his charge through the duration of the Brothers' War. A large man and ambidextrous, Hajar was seen dual-wielding burning scimitars, striking an imposing figure against those who would attempt to attack Mishra.[2]
Mishra sought to capture Terisia City when he reached a stalemate with Urza in the east. When diplomacy failed, he sent Hajar and his armies to besiege the city. The Terisian defenses were implacable and held the Fallaji under the command of Hajar at bay for months. Unarmed civilians were slowly moved out of the city, while the Third Path sought magical knowledge with which to combat their foes. It is possible that the Fallaji would have been permanently stalled had it not been for the Gixians who were welcomed into the Order of the Ivory Towers. They finally betrayed the city and opened the gates to the onslaught, leading to the Fall of Terisia City.[3] Hurkyl died as one of the defenders, casting a spell that would be named in memory of her - Hurkyl's Recall - to disappear Mishra's dragon engines.[4] Hajar was one of the commanders during the siege of the city, felling the Ivory Towers, defeating the Archimandrite, and tearing the city apart.[5]
Hajar accompanied Mishra for the Invasion of Argoth, but when Ashnod appeared, she saw that he had lost his position as the closest to Mishra. Mishra now listened only to the Brotherhood of Gix. Ashnod arranged for Hajar and Gwenna to board a ship for the mainland, which meant that he was not present on the island for the Battle at Argoth or the Sylex Blast.
