Higure (HEE-goo-reh)[1], the Still Wind, was a human ninja of Kamigawa during the time of the Kami War.
Description[ | ]
Higure, also known as "the Still Wind," was a master ninja who embodied the essence of stealth, discipline, and emotional endurance. Trained from a young age, he moved with an almost supernatural grace and silence, merging seamlessly with his surroundings, whether in shadows or nature. His tragic past, marked by the slaughter of his family and village by malevolent spirits, drove him to suppress all emotion and focus solely on his duty. This stoic and sorrowful ninja carried out his missions with flawless precision, leading his disciples in lethal operations while reflecting on the deep pain and loss that shaped his cold, calculating nature. Higure's journey was one of survival and sacrifice, defined by his mastery of ninjutsu and the harsh acceptance of the solitude his role demands.[2]
History[ | ]
Higure was a master shinobi orphaned as a child and trained at the Temple of the Black Scroll. He killed at least 33 targets, including humans, kitsune, and soratami. He trained a student for each life he took. He was named Higure, meaning "twilight," by his master, Kagero.[2][3]
Higure led his disciples on a mission to infiltrate the villa of Nitta, a samurai merchant who had been living in seclusion due to the ongoing war. The target was the merchant, his guards, and his heir, who were marked for assassination. Higure and his followers executed the operation with flawless precision, scaling walls and moving through the villa like phantoms. Taking on the role of an observer, Higure guided his disciples and ensured that the mission's critical part — an attack in the main hall—proceeded without issue.[2]
As Higure moves through the villa, he reflects on his tragic past, recalling the night when his village was attacked by malevolent kami, leaving him as the sole survivor of his family. These memories underscored the depth of his pain and the reasons behind his stoic demeanor. His thoughts also revisited his early training under Master Kagero, where he learned the lesson of "nin" — to endure. This endurance, both physical and emotional, shaped Higure's ability to suppress his desires, fears, and sorrows to fulfill his ninja duties. His status as a master ninja was symbolized by Master Kagero naming him "Higure," meaning twilight, and "the Still Wind," reflecting his ability to remain unseen in the most challenging circumstances. Finally, upon entering the main hall, Higure encountered a lone guard and Nitta's daughter Kio. Using a combination of stealth and tactics, he and his disciples eliminated the threat without alerting the rest of the household, fulfilling his role as both leader and assassin with no room for hesitation or doubt, even though he had once fallen in love with Kio's beauty from afar.[2]
