Hormgart is a dwarven skald, who is living his afterlife in the great hall of Starnheim.[1]
Description[ | ]
Hormgart is a renowned dwarven skald with a venerable appearance, characterized by a gray mustache that has seen countless centuries. His eyes, stone-colored and glinting in the firelight, convey a deep well of wisdom and experience. Despite his age, he maintains a robust presence, with knobby, weathered hands that speak of a lifetime spent recounting tales of valor and heroism.[1]
Hormgart possesses the soul of a storyteller, embodying the warmth and sagacity of an elder Bard. His demeanor is jovial yet earnest, with a penchant for spinning tales that blend historical truth with the embellishments of myth and legend. He has a grandfatherly air about him, preferring narrative depth over theatricality, which sets him apart from other skalds who may focus more on grandiose tales of conquest.[1]
History[ | ]
In the grand hall of Starnheim, the Valkyrie shepherd Njala sought out Hormgart to learn more about Arni Brokenbrow, the mortal warrior whose exploits had captured her attention. Njala found Hormgart amidst a festive atmosphere in Starnheim, where heroes from all realms gather eternally. Hormgart, deep in his cups but ever ready to share a tale, recounted the story of how Arni earned his name.[1]
Hormgart recounted how Arni was once known as Goatleaper. In the Tusk Mountains, there were reports of trolls terrorizing villages along the Red Ridge. The news excited the Tuskeri warriors, including Arni's band, who saw an opportunity to earn glory by confronting the trolls. Arni emerged victorious, with a troll's bone embedded in his forehead where the tusks had struck. This defining moment marked the end of his days as Goatleaper and the beginning of his renown as Arni Brokenbrow.[1]
Hormgart's tale revealed to Njala the origins of Arni's epithet, underscoring his courage, cunning, and heroic fate. His story resonated deeply with Njala, who reflected on the mortal's journey towards a place among the honored in Starnheim.[1]
