The Brothers' War

Hurkyl was one of the founders of the College of Lat-Nam as well as the Union of the Third Path at the time of the Brothers' War on Dominaria.[1] She was the wife of Drafna and played a major part in rediscovering magic on Terisiare.

Description[ | ]

Hurkyl wore a headband and had almond-shaped eyes. She had ornate designs tattooed on her shoulders. She was a graceful and rather quiet, timid woman. The only person she seemed comfortable to correct was her husband, Drafna. Loran had only heard Hurkyl utter a whole sentence once per year during the first three years of their stay in Terisia City.[2]

The College of Lat-Nam had a problem with lice, and so when they arrived at Terisia City, both Hurkyl and Drafna were fully shaved bald. However, as the years went on in Terisia City, they let their hair grow out, and Hurkyl proved to have thick, luxurious tresses that caught the light like strands of obsidian cord. [2]

History[ | ]

After founding the College of Lat-Nam with her husband, the artificer Drafna, the couple was invited to Terisia City by the Archimandrite. Hurkyl joined her husband, Feldon, Chayum-Icha, Kathwar and others to attend meetings to establish the Union of the Third Path. They had hoped to create an alliance of magic users, historians, intellectuals, and artificers from across the continent that sought neutrality in the war between Urza and Mishra. Members of the Third Path were the first to delve into the arcane and rigorously study it, perhaps in all of Terisiare's history. Because of its friendly atmosphere, people of all cultures flocked to Terisia City to join the teams of mages and scholars and seek shelter from the chaos elsewhere. The Union was hailed as a peaceful counterpoint to the two brothers.

Hurkyl's Final Meditation

Her final spell, Hurkyl's Recall caused three dragon engines to disappear

After the foundation of the Union, Hurkyl spent her remaining life in Terisia City. Although Hurkyl never returned to Lat-Nam, Drafna traveled back and forth between Terisia City and the island numerous times. She became famous for her meditations, where she sat in the morning and thought of her home in Lat-Nam, of the azure-colored waves, white with froth, suspended over the shore before crashing down. She taught her techniques to an increasingly growing crowd of pupils, including the Archimandrite. The first sign of her magic, which they called "incidents" was that Hurkyl's quarters tended to clean and tidy themselves after her meditations.[2]

Hurkyl died during the Fall of Terisia City in 45 AR, when Mishra's forces finally got past the gates of Terisia City after months of siege. After her final meditation, Hurkyl famously cast a spell at the gates of the city that vaporized three dragon engines with a spell known later as Hurkyl's Recall. She was killed by invading spearmen right afterwards.[2][3] This was the first true recorded manifestation of magic in Terisiare, and Hurkyl may have been Terisiare's first true wizard.
