The Invasion of Tolaria was an event that started happening in 3347, escalating over time until the climactic battle in 3357 AR on the island of Tolaria, on the plane of Dominaria.
Description[]
After 10 years of steadily increasing attacks from the Phyrexians, Barrin witnessed a massive Phyrexian assault, featuring grotesque monsters and warped humanoids. They swarmed against Tolaria's defenders, who unleashed powerstones, falcons, and runners in a desperate, bloody battle to hold the line. As relentless Phyrexians overwhelmed Tolaria's defenses, breaching walls and overrunning the school, Barrin summoned every available artifact creature, including su-chi, clay statues, and Yotian soldiers, and prepared to fight alongside the remaining defenders in what he believed would be Tolaria's final stand. As Phyrexians breached Tolaria, Urza teleported in from his imprisonment in Yavimaya carrying the spirit of Multani with him. Urza used devastating fire and molten stone magic to seal wells, repair walls, and incinerate attackers, vowing to prevent another catastrophe like Argoth, even as new waves of monsters advanced.[1]
Urza used his magic to temporarily turn Phyrexians against each other and unearth buried scorpion engines to hold the enemy at bay. Within the walls, he met Barrin, who was fighting fiercely but despairing of their survival. Urza revealed that he had repaired the wall and planned to kill K'rrik to end the battle. Teleporting to Shiv, Urza gathered reinforcements: Jhoira, Teferi, fire-hardened warriors, Thran-metal runners, goblins, viashino, the dragon Rhammidarigaaz, and Karn. Despite their readiness and determination, Urza knew these forces might not suffice, urging them to follow him into the final confrontation. Urza transported his allied forces back to the Tolarian courtyard. The forces joined the chaotic battle but remained insufficient against the Phyrexian onslaught. Seeking greater aid, Urza planeswalked back to Shiv to the dragon Gherridarigaaz and convinced her to fight by promising to reunite her with her son, Rhammidarigaaz. Together, they returned to Tolaria, where the dragon's fiery assault devastated the Phyrexians and boosted the defenders' morale.[1]
Leaving the battle, Urza appeared at a dam near K'rrik's fast-time dome and a reservoir of water. He destroyed the dam, unleashing a massive flood that swept him into the gorge. Using the water as cover, he infiltrated the time rent to destroy the Phyrexian spawning grounds, kill K'rrik, and purge Tolaria of the Phyrexian menace. Urza emerged from the flooded Phyrexian gorge and infiltrated the enemy's mutagenic labs, determined to destroy K'rrik's army of vat-grown monstrosities. Inside the cavern, he found rows of vats containing grotesque, embryonic Phyrexians, sustained by fluids extracted from slaughtered citizens. Using immense magical power, Urza unleashed devastating lightning to ignite the vats, obliterating the creatures and the facilities. Despite his success, the effort left him physically and magically drained. As he prepared to finish the destruction, a reprogrammed falcon engine, designed to target Urza himself, ambushed him. The machine savaged his body, preventing him from regenerating or planeswalking to safety. At that moment, K'rrik appeared.[1]
K'rrik taunted Urza, revealing that his defeat was set in motion long ago when Urza first invaded Phyrexia. K'rrik boasted about his plans, including hidden chambers holding thousands of additional Phyrexian warriors ready to emerge and overwhelm Dominaria. As K'rrik moved to deliver a killing blow, Urza was suddenly infused with strength from the forest spirit Multani, enabling a single planeswalk. Using this power, Urza planeswalked directly into K'rrik's body, destroying him from within in an explosive burst of flesh and oil. The falcon engine that had been attacking Urza ceased its assault and retreated, no longer recognizing him as its target. Guided by Multani, Urza cleansed the remaining Phyrexian chambers, solidifying an alliance with the forest spirit.[1]
