The Jalum Tome was a powerful, ancient book of Thran civilization containing all their knowledge and designs. Urza used it as a construction manual for many artifacts that he created, including the Weatherlight.
History[]
The Jalum Tome was a Thran artifact that surfaced as part of the dowry for Princess Kayla bin-Kroog. It was this artifact that inspired Urza to participate in the contest to move the Warlord of Kroog's statue, using his smarts rather than brawn.
The Jalum Tome stayed in the possession of Urza's family after his marriage, and at times, Kayla felt he was more interested in the book than in her. The Jalum Tome eventually passed into the possession of their grandson, Jarsyl, who took it with him to the Conclave of Mages.[1]
At some point after joining the Conclave, Jarsyl discovered a portal to Phyrexia, possibly the one at Koilos[2]. What happened to the Jalum Tome after that is unknown. Urza recovered it at some point as part of his work on the Legacy, and it passed into Karn's hands.
During the Phyrexian Invasion, Karn discovered that the tome held infinitely more information, and because he was strongly linked to the Legacy he soon digested all of its knowledge. Even Urza didn't know the Jalum Tome as intimately as Karn came to know it. The Jalum Tome was also the main factor in reshaping the Weatherlight to its final form.
At the end of Phyrexian Invasion, The Legacy merged with Karn. All of its powerful parts, including the Jalun Tome, united and gave Karn knowledge and power beyond other planeswalkers.
