Not to be confused with Johan.

Johann is a Human wizard boy from Eldraine. He is the apprentice of the archmage Gadwick.[1]

Description[ | ]

Johann is an apprentice sorcerer with a knack for elementary cantrips.[2] He has mastered the hydroloft spell.[3]

Inspiration[ | ]

Johann is based on the Apprentice of The Sorcerer's Apprentice. His name is likely a reference to Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, the author of the poem. Johann's Stopgap may be a reference to The Little Dutch Boy, a boy who plugged a dike with his finger.

History[ | ]

Once just a nervous village boy, Johann was chosen to be an apprentice to Gadwick, the sorcerer of Caervelin.[2]

After his master left Caervelin on mysterious wizard business, Johann tried to maintain the complex mechanisms that ruled the wizard's domain.[1] He failed and wounded up unleashing a flood of elementals throughout the tower. When he couldn't contain the rainwater elementals, he attempted to dispel them using draconic fire.[4] When the combined elementals grew even more out of control, he attempted to animate the furniture to fight back. As his methods failed and the flames grew, he escaped his home using a hydroloft spell as it was consumed by fire.[3]

The Apprentice’s Folly[ | ]

Johann's story is told in the folktale The Apprentice’s Folly.
