Observer Kaluzax was an Izzet League pilot of observosphere Peripatetic Eye of Niv-Mizzet 9477, who was tasked to perform the mana-implosion device experiment of Zomaj Hauc in the Utvara region in 9965. The observosphere was capable of flight at higher altitudes beyond that of normal Ravnican air traffic such as transport zeppelids, rocs, bats, and flying mounts. Only wild zeppelids, the Parhelion, and Niv-Mizzet himself could fly as high. Izzet designed flame-pods allowed the observosphere to accelerate from 58.6 miles per hour to exactly thirteen times that speed in a matter of seconds.

The sphere was damaged during a Gruul aerial attack, and Kaluzax was unable to get out of the experiment's place in time. Kaluzax and his sphere were trapped in the implosion event horizon, becoming the illusionary kuga mot, plague herald, that haunted the place ever since. Kaluzax’s demise exemplified the motto of the Izzet Observation Corps, “Die trying.”[1]
