Kellan, also called Kel, is a half-Fae half-Human from Eldraine.[1] He is the son of the human Alyse and the faerie Planeswalker Oko.[2]

Description[ | ]

Kellan is wiry and small for his age.[1][3] He has brown skin, hazel brown eyes, thick, wavy brown or black hair, and pointed ears.[4][5][6][7] Honest by nature, it is possible his fae blood makes it very difficult or impossible for him to lie.[8]

Kellan was gifted two magical basket hilts by Talion.[1] The swords ignite with a blade of ethereal light that sharpens like thorns around the hilts and can be used as a makeshift whip.[9][2] He wears a vibrantly-colored enchanted coat his mother Alyse made for him that depicts the story of his parents' meeting, a red and white tunic, and what looks like branches covering the upper part of his chest.[4]

Kellan eventually learned to generate magical golden vines without the use of his sword hilts.[7] He can form these vines into a variety of golden weapons.[10][11] His fae powers give him the ability to fly, bursting golden faerie dust from his feet as he does.[12] He can induce calm in enemies, causing them to enter a dreamlike trance.[13]

Kellan's office at the Ravnican Agency of Magicological Investigations was a semi-partitioned corner alcove off the main floor with a desk, a rickety file cabinet, and a small brass projektor on a pedestal.[14] His projektor's stylus appeared to be fashioned from one of Ezrim's feathers.

History[ | ]

Kellan's mother Alyse was a human woman and his father was the young faerie planeswalker Oko.[1][2] After the two separated, she later married the shepherd Ronald.[9] On Oko's return to Eldraine in 4560 AR, he reached out to Alyse again, but she chose to remain with her son.[2]

The Wicked Slumber[ | ]

Kellan grew up as a sheep farmer in a small home in Orrinshire with his mother Alyse, stepfather Ronald, and family sheepdog Hex.[1][15] The smallest boy in his village, he was often bullied by local kids, including the sons of Matilda Cotter, for being a "half-blood" and blamed as the cause of the Wicked Slumber. At age sixteen, on the night of a new moon six months after New Phyrexia's Invasion of the Multiverse, Kellan was called to realm of the Fae Lord Talion, who gave him the quest of defeating the witch sisters Agatha, Eriette, and Hylda and ending the Wicked Slumber in exchange for giving Kellan information about his father.

On his quest, he traveled to Edgewall, where he met Ruby.[16][17] The two traveled to Dunbarrow, where Kellan hoped to locate a witch, and Ruby hoped to find her brother Peter. They were pursued by the Wolf Knight but were able to escape through a pack of Witchstalkers. Stumbling upon Agatha's cabin, Kellan slays the witch by pushing her into her cauldron and rescues the captured knight Imodane. After Agatha's death, the enchantment on the Wolf Knight lifted, and he revealed himself to be Peter. Together with his new friends, Kellan presented Talion with the hag's cauldron and was directed up a beanstalk in search of Indrelon.

With the vedalken Troyan as their guide, Kellan and Ruby climbed up the beanstalk to Stormkeld.[18] Consulting the mirror, they found Hylda's ice castle in Loch Laurent. Braving the ice, Kellan learned to use his basket hilts while fighting frost warriors but fell prey to the Wicked Slumber a mile from the castle.[9] Hylda took mercy on the two, reviving Kellan, relinquishing her crown, and informing them that Talion was also responsible for the curse.

The two were gifted ponies by Talion and sent to infiltrate Castle Ardenvale to defeat the final witch.[2] Captured by Rowan Kenrith, they were able to escape when Will Kenrith and his knights assaulted the castle. When Ashiok appeared, Kellan helped Will subdue the planeswalker, allowing Will's knights to capture Eriette, though Rowan escaped. Returning to Talion, Kellan declined his reward, choosing to learn his parentage from his mother. He returned to Orrinshire, where she revealed his father's identity as the planeswalker Oko.

Kellan stumbled upon an omenpath in search of more answers about his father.[2] He entered and found himself on the plane of Ixalan.[19][20]

Lost Caverns of Ixalan[ | ]

Kellan Daring Traveler

On Ixalan.

Kellan found a way into the caverns beneath Ixalan and eventually collided with an expedition party of vampires led by Vito.[4] Kellan was allowed to travel with the party, where he befriended the vampiric cartographer Amalia. Eventually, they arrived in Ixalan's legendary Core, where a Sun Empire expedition party led by Huatli coincidentally appeared at the same time. The vampires were imprisoned, but all besides Amalia broke out to pursue Vito's goal of setting free the ancient bat god of night, Aclazotz.[21] Kellan and Amalia aligned themselves instead with the Core's native Oltecs, who would be wiped out if Aclazotz were allowed to regain his full power.[22] After helping defeat the god and his demonic vampire minions, Kellan returned to the surface with Amalia, Malcolm, and Breeches, intending to find another Omenpath and pursue further adventure. He was surprised when Amalia offered to accompany him, but had no objection, and they went through together.[23]

Murders at Karlov Manor[ | ]

Kellan emerged in Ravnica, where the plane was still destabilized by the consequences of the recent Phyrexian invasion.[3][24] Hoping to discover information relating to his father, he joined the Ravnican Agency of Magicological Investigations under the archon Ezrim and earned high honors by stopping the Gruul god Anzrag from rampaging across the Ninth District. For his accomplishment, he was invited by Teysa Karlov to a party at Karlov Manor one month later and given a purse of zinos. At the party, Zegana was assassinated.[25] After Alquist Proft exposed Etrata, a Dimir assassin secretly in attendance, Kellan and the planeswalker Kaya Cassir assisted Proft in apprehending her. Three days later, he joined the case under Kaya when she revealed that Teysa Karlov had been murdered as well.[8]

While investigating the Cult of Rakdos, a group of ruffians accosted the two.[26] They subdued their attackers but were stopped from questioning them when the thugs took suicide herbs. Returning to the Agency headquarters, they learned that Teysa's killer had been discovered: a guildless man who claimed to have no memory of the murder. When Aurelia appeared with Massacre Girl in tow, who had attempted to kill the Boros guildmaster while also brainwashed, they were given 24 hours to reveal the mastermind behind the murders before the Boros declared war on the Rakdos.

Kellan returned to his office with Kaya, where they reviewed all the evidence they had so far and ruled Rakdos out as a suspect.[14] Their thought process was interrupted when an alarm sounded in the building. The two moved toward the source of the commotion, which was revealed to be Anzrag, who had escaped from his containment capsule. Kaya distracted the god while Kellan retrieved the capsule, and they returned him to containment.

Kellan was later present at the meeting in Vitu-Ghazi where Proft divulged the true identity of the killer: Oba, the central dryad of Trostani.[12] When she lashed out and attacked all the guild members present, Kellan was flung through an opening in the ceiling. While falling, he discovered that the same natural fae magic that animated his basket hilts also allowed him to fly, although he couldn't control it yet. After Trostani was subdued by Kaya and Etrata, Kellan returned to his desk at the Agency.[27]

Thunder Junction[ | ]

Kellan, the Kid

On Thunder Junction.

While on Ravnica, Kellan learned that there was an initiative by Niv-Mizzet and Ral Zarek to create permanent lines of interplanar communication by setting up relay pylons through Omenpaths. One such relay was routed to Thunder Junction, where Ezrim had told him Oko was.[6] He applied for the job and was accepted, having endeared himself to Ral in the fight against Oba. A short time after arrival, Ral decided to take Kellan on as a bodyguard rather than a manual laborer, which would take him to the wealthy city of Prosperity. Kellan hoped that he would have more success finding information there.

On the road to Prosperity, Ral and Kellan crossed paths with someone whom Kellan immediately recognized as his father.[7] The shock of recognition disrupted Oko's shapeshifting abilities; unfortunately, he had been using them to cover up that he had just broken into Sterling Company headquarters. Ral's bodyguards, who were from the Sterling Company themselves, opened fire, forcing Oko to run away. Kellan was able to catch up to his father and inform him of his identity, and subsequently helped him shake Ral and the Sterling Company. Impressed with his loyalty, Oko decided to let Kellan join his gang. They returned together to Oko's base, where Kellan was shocked to recognize Eriette and Ashiok. However, his father assured him that grudges from other planes had no place on Thunder Junction.

Oko planned to crack the legendary treasure vault Maag Taranau.[10] He had just stolen a key to the vault from the Sterling Company but was unsure where to use it. A member of Oko's gang, Annie Flash, informed him of a scholar, Nolan, who studied ancient artifacts. The Sterling Company had contracted him to study the key on their behalf, and Oko decided to poach his talent by kidnapping him from a train under heavy guard. Kellan was worried about this plan, but Oko promised him that no innocents would be harmed. He and Kellan snuck onto Nolan's train while the rest of the gang caused a distraction. They successfully subdued the Sterling guards and extracted Nolan from the train, but their distraction had set the train to run off a destroyed bridge with innocents inside. Kellan wanted to save them, but Oko went back on his promise and ran away.

With a massive expenditure of magic, Kellan managed to grow magic vines that stalled the train over the canyon, allowing the passengers to disembark.[10] He was bailed out by Annie, who helped him escape from the incoming Sterling vanguard and regroup with the gang. With the knowledge Nolan provided them, the team located Tarnation, the fortress of the draconic outlaw Akul and the location of Maag Taranau.[28] Kellan, alongside his father, Annie, and Vraska, infiltrated the town, but they were discovered immediately when Kellan was too polite to a Hellspur. After a clash, they were caught, and the Hellspurs recognized Oko from reports on the Graywater heist. The team was brought before Akul to be tortured and executed, but Kellan, searching for any way to escape death, challenged the dragon to a duel. At the risk of losing face in front of his gang, Akul was forced to accept.

The duel began, and Akul informed Kellan that it would be to the death.[11] After avoiding a few of the dragon's blows, Kellan experienced another awakening in his magic, casting a spell on his opponent that clouded his mind and made him unable to move. However, before Kellan was able to asphyxiate him, Akul recovered and pinned him. As he was about to deliver the finishing blow, the fight was interrupted by Sterling Company mercenaries led by Ral, whom Oko had tipped off on Tarnation's location before they arrived. A fight broke out, and in the chaos, Oko stole the vault key back from Akul and ran. Kellan tried to follow but got knocked out by a Sterling guard. As he lost consciousness, he saw his father regarding him with indifference as he left for the vault.

Kellan awoke in a Sterling prison wagon and reflected on how his idealism had allowed his father to exploit him.[11] Suddenly, the wagon was broken into by Ral, who freed Kellan from his cell. Ral told Kellan he believed that whatever was in the vault, nobody on the plane could be trusted with access to it. He planned to take the treasure and move it to a secure location on another plane where nobody would be able to find it, and he wanted Kellan's help doing so. Kellan agreed to the plan. Kellan and Ral intercepted Oko and the gang just before they were able to open the vault, and they fought over the key.[13] The fight was interrupted when Ashiok arrived and paralyzed Kellan with magic, allowing Oko to let them into the vault. However, as they secured their prize, the vault's crown jewel, they released an illusion on themself, revealing themself to be Jace Beleren in disguise. Vraska attempted to petrify Oko, but he planeswalked away before she could do so.

As Kellan recovered from his paralysis, Jace and Vraska disappeared with the vault's treasure, and the structure began to collapse.[13] Kellan rallied the remaining members of the gang, but as he was about to escape, Annie was grabbed by Akul, who had pursued Oko to the vault. Kellan fully accepted his fae heritage and cast a mind-control spell on Akul, ordering him to release Annie, go into the vault, and never come out. As he did so, Kellan and Annie made their escape.

In the aftermath of the heist's failure, Kellan temporarily stayed at Annie's ranch and used the interplanar relay to send a message to Amalia, inviting her to settle on Thunder Junction with him.[13] Ral showed up to check on Kellan and offered him a job on Ravnica, but Kellan declined. When Amalia arrived, the two set out to map the newly settled plane.
