Template:Expansion 6th Edition, also known as Classic, is a Core Set that was released in 1999. Major rule changes occurred with the release of 6th Edition.
Set details
6th edition is the first core set to use the color-coded rarity symbols first introduced in Exodus.
No cards with trample were printed in 6th Edition.
Rule changes
- A player who reaches 0 life loses immediately instead of waiting until the end of a phase.
- The stack was introduced for resolving spells and abilities, replacing the old batch system.
- Interrupts and mana sources were removed, with all old interrupt and mana source cards receiving errata to make them instants.
- The word "summon" was replaced with "creature" on creature card type lines.
- Most artifacts that are tapped no longer have their abilities turned off. Those that still had their abilities turned off received errata so that it was an ability of the card rather than a feature of the card type.
- The type line on creature cards was changed so that each word on it counts as a separate creature type, allowing creature cards to have multiple subtypes without needing extra rules text. Artifact creatures with creature types also had their creature type printed on their type line, rather than having it stated in their rules text.
Cycles
Sixth Edition has six cycles:
- Circles of protection: These are each common white enchantments with the ability to prevent the next damage from a source of a color for 1 mana — Circle of Protection: White, Circle of Protection: Blue, Circle of Protection: Black, Circle of Protection: Red and Circle of Protection: Green.
- Diamonds: Each diamond artifact costs to play; comes into play tapped; and produces one mana of the appropriate color when tapped — Charcoal Diamond, Fire Diamond, Marble Diamond, Moss Diamond, and Sky Diamond. They were originally printed in Mirage, then reprinted again in 7th Edition.
- Fallen Empire Sac lands: Uncommon lands illustrated by Mark Poole that share the text "[This] comes into play tapped. : Add C to your mana pool. , sacrifice [this]: Add CC to your mana pool.", where C is the respective color of the land — Ruins of Trokair, Svyelunite Temple, Ebon Stronghold, Dwarven Ruins, and Havenwood Battleground.
- Fallen Empires Storage Lands: rare lands illustrated by Pat Morrissey that share the text "[This] comes into play tapped. You may choose not to untap [this] during your untap step. At the beginning of your upkeep, if [this] is tapped, put a storage counter on it. , remove any number of storage counters from [this]: Add C to your mana pool for each storage counter removed this way." — Icatian Store, Sand Silos, Bottomless Vault, Dwarven Hold, and Hollow Trees.
- Lucky charms: Each of these uncommon artifacts has a triggered ability that allows the controller pay to gain 1 life when a spell of a given color resolves — Ivory Cup, Crystal Rod, Throne of Bone, Iron Star, and Wooden Sphere.
- Painlands: Rare lands with ": add 1 to your mana pool. : Add C or D to your mana pool. [This] deals 1 damage to you." C and D are allied colors of mana. These lands are called painlands because their use for colored mana is "painful," referring to the damage they do to you. — Adarkar Wastes, Brushland, Underground River, Sulfurous Springs, and Karplusan Forest.
