Korlis is an island in the archipelago of the Terisian Isles of Dominaria.[1]
Description[ | ]
The island of Korlis is a fertile land, able to sustain the cultivation of burgundy wine grapes.[2]
History[ | ]
Korlis used to be part of the mainland. It was settled by seafarers from east of Terisiare.[3] During the Brothers' War, Korlis was the southeastern of the three ancient coastal kingdoms of Terisiare.[4]
Korlis was ruled by a merchant council and engaged primarily in trade with the rest of the nations of Terisiare. The kingdom used a currency called "korls."[5]
The River Kor flowed through the city itself, and there was an abundant forest around it at one time, but lumber was harvested by Urza's armies until the area around the city was barren. Near it was Korlinda, which was the location of the Peace Summit at Korlinda, an aborted peace conference between Argive, Korlis, Yotia, and the Fallaji, two years before the beginning of the Brother's War.
In 36 AR, Korlis became part of the Combined Kingdoms, which had Urza as its Lord High Protector. The nation inspired the Martyrs of Korlis, young idealists who were killed in the war, instigating the Liberation of Yotia.[4]
Korlis instituted a draft during the war as part of the Tomakul Campaign of 955 PF (43 AR). After the war, the Church of Tal liberated Korlis from a machine warlord.[6]
While Korlis survived into the Dark Age, its hold on the land around it decreased as time passed. Eventually, the reach of Korlis extended not much further than its city walls, and as such, the former nation had become one of the Southern City-States. During the Dark Age, several other city-states sprang up in the land around it, eventually numbering twelve in total.[7]
Around the Start of the Ice Age, the amount of water locked into glaciers caused the sea levels to drop, revealing the fertile land that would become Fyndhorn from the ocean floor, and Korlis became the northernmost part of that lush region.
After millennia of being clear of the ocean, the Flooding of Terisiare cast most of Fyndhorn once again beneath the waves, but a portion of the green land survived in the form of an island in the newly created Shattered Sea[8], which carried the name of Korlis into the present age. It is considered part of the united nation of New Argive.
