Mabel’s party is the party of misfit heroes led by Mabel, formed to repel the Calamity Beasts in the Bloomburrow storyline.
History[ | ]
Investigation of Pondside[ | ]
The party first formed on Mabel's birthday around 4564 AR, after Helga warned her about the Calamity Beasts. Mabel fetched Cragflame from her attic and announced that she would travel to Pondside to find out what had happened there.[1] Finneas, Gev, Hugs, Zoraline, and Helga are part of the party.
When they arrived at Pondside, they found that it was destroyed by Maha. Hugs, Mabel, and Zoraline reasoned or divined that the survivors headed south to Haymeadow.[2] They also found two squirrelfolk necromancers that were digging up bones and things to steal. The squirrelfolk animated the skeletons of Pondside’s deceased, which the party defeated, but the necromancers escaped towards Long River. The party decided to head after them:
Arrival at Three Trees City[ | ]
The party arrived at Three Trees City, and Mabel and Finneas asked around to find out where the squirrelfolk was. There they encountered Ral Zarek as an otterfolk looking for Jace Beleren, who he assumed was in fox shape. Helga saw Jace in one of her visions and said that he was with a green- and black-scaled lizardfolk and some small creature.[2]
It was then that The Flood Gale attacked Three Trees City. Huge waves crashed over the Dockland, flooding the Long River. Hugs kept the party afloat, along with Ral Zarek. [2]
Arrival in Ratfolk Territory[ | ]
The party washed up into a cavern inhabited by hostile and defensive ratfolk, who told the party to leave. After explaining that they arrived on accident, the ratfolk’s superior, Coffey, stepped in[3] and offered the party hospitality.
There the party learned that a weaselfolk named Cruelclaw had stolen a calamity beast’s egg, and was leading his band through Bloomburrow to pillage and cause the calamity beasts to wreak havoc in their wake.[4] After a brief discussion, the party resolved to retrieve the egg and return it to its rightful place.
Helga used her augury to locate Cruelclaw and unconsciously drew a picture of Fountainport.[4] When she took out her journal, Ral noticed the picture of what Helga assumed was the Sun Hawk, and noted that it seemed familiar.
Journey to Fountainport[ | ]
Shortcut across dandelion fields[ | ]
A molefolk named Tucker led the party out of the tunnels to a marshland. To the north and west was forest, and to the east, there was a crag. The ratfolk recommended that the party head north, then east to Fountainport so that the party could get shelter and provisions in woodland villages along the way, though there were a few lizardfolk villages in the hills.[4]
Hugs and Gev knew of a shortcut across a dandelion field. Tucker told them that the field was currently stormy with a large and terrible creature,[4] but Mabel decided to bring the party through the shortcut.
In the fields the party saw that creature, known as the “Storm Hawk,”[5] which Ral explained was animal-shifted dragon from another plane.[4] Mabel told the party to be quiet, and they sneaked through the fields until Zoraline, who was asleep, woke up and started talking, attracting the dragon's attention. Ral Zarek told the others to run and fought the dragon alone while the rest of the party hid under a boulder.
Audience with King Glarb[ | ]
The party arrived at Fountainport,[5], and ascended to the top level where they requested King Glarb’s presence. King Glarb revealed that he had hired Cruelclaw to steal Maha’s egg so that he may raise the young calamity beast as the protector of Valley. The egg was hidden in the throne room behind leaves.
The party fought King Glarb and defeated Cruelclaw and his mercenaries.[5] During the fight, the Storm Hawk descended upon the throne room. Soon after, Maha arrived and defeated the Storm Hawk.
Mabel returned Maha's stolen egg to her, after which Maha ceased her rampage and departed peacefully.[5]
Epilogue[ | ]
The party returned to Goodhill via cabbage wagon.[5] At their arrival, they were met with celebration.
