Mabel is a mousefolk from Goodhill on Bloomburrow.[1] She is the main character of the Bloomburrow storyline.
Description[ | ]
Baker, hero, and mother, Mabel lives in the village of Goodhill with her husband Clem and their three adorable children: Rosalyn, Foggy and Pip.[2] Mabel has brown or auburn fur and obsidian eyes, and is the same height as her husband.[3][4] She wears an orange dress with a bright red holly button at her throat and normally carries a thistle-hilt rapier forged from the metal sap of ironroot trees, but also possesses the magical sword Cragflame. In her other hand, she carries a small ironsap shield emblazoned with a five-petaled mallow flower.[5]
Though she is a baker by trade, Mabel is an experienced swordfighter, and has mastered the weaving ability of blurring, allowing her to obscure her movements.[4]
Mabel is a scion of a mighty and storied group of soldiers called the Order of the Holly Leaf.[6][1][7] She is descended from the legendary hero Lily Emberseed.[3][8] Though she is valorous, she is unsure if she can live up to the great deeds of her ancestor.[2]
History[ | ]
Mabel inherited Cragflame from her mother, Iris.[3] She was a wild child: rambunctious at heart, always getting into mischief, and never home by nightfall.[2] In her youth, she joined a mousefolk band that traveled to the highest of hills in Valley to scale the Cliff of Heroes.[3] She joined the local band of mousefolk defenders when bandits attacked Goodhill, protecting the town and driving off the outlaws. As she grew older, she found tending her family to be enough adventure, content to live her life in peace.
On Mabel's birthday around 4564 AR, she was warned by the frogfolk augur Helga about the coming of the Calamity Beasts.[7] For the sake of her family, her friends, and her home, she answered the call to adventure. She fetched Cragflame from her attic, and announced that she would travel to Pondside to find out what had happened there.[3] Finneas, Gev, Hugs, Zoraline, and Helga volunteered to accompany her. Later in Three Trees City, Ral Zarek joined her party. After counseling from a group of ratfolk, the party decided to go to the city of Fountainport to consult King Glarb, Bloomburrow's most renowned augur.
Upon arriving in Fountainport, the party was able to secure an audience with Glarb. However, the king revealed that he was the one responsible for the Calamities' rampage, as he had stolen the egg of the Great Night Owl Maha in hopes of taming a Calamity of his own. He summoned Cruelclaw, the mercenary who had brought him the egg, to dispose of Mabel's party, but their fight was interrupted by the appearance of Maha itself. Mabel soothed the beast's wrath by returning its egg, saving the plane from the wrath of the Calamities.
At the end of her journey, she reunited with her loving family. She also gave Ral a pair of ironsap buttons for him and his husband before he planeswalked away.[9]
Inspiration[ | ]
Mabel is likely inspired by Mrs. Brisby/Frisby from The Secret of NIMH, being a mother mouse thrust into adventure and associated with the color red.
Mabel is also likely inspired by the Redwall book series, one of the major inspirations for the set. Each main character in Redwall is a heroic mouse whose name is two syllables and starts with the letter M.
