The Premier Play Program for Magic Online was introduced in 2020 to incorporate both the revamped Players Tour system and the Magic Online Championship Series into a single program.[1] Season 1 of the 2020 MTGO Premier Play Program began Tuesday, December 10, 2019. Starting in 2022 the Play Program was incorporated in the overall Premier Play program.[2]

Champions Showcase logo

The Magic Online Premier Play features a seasonal model. For 2020, Wizards of the Coast split the year into shorter seasons of about seventeen weeks each. Each season had its qualifying events and culminated in an eight-player in-person Champions Showcase (MOCS) with its prize pool of $70,000 and an invitation to an upcoming Players Tour Finals. Once a qualifying season is over, the system will reset and start a new season. Starting in the 2022–23 Pro Tour Season, the MOCS will give access to the Pro Tour.

Players only earn a single Premier Play entry object, Qualifier Points (QPs). With the seasonal reset, all earned QPs are removed from players' accounts before starting the new season.

Starting with the 2022 Magic Online Champions Showcase Season 2, players who qualify for the final eight-player Showcase event will also earn invitations to the Pro Tour. Both the winner and the runner-up of the Showcase event will also earn direct invitations to the World Championship.[2] It should be noted that the Seasons as described here are offset from the Pro Tours, so Season 2 and 3 of one year and Season 1 of the next all qualify for the same Worlds. Magic Online Champions Showcase Top 2s are counted as a Top Finish.

The structure of the Showcase is of two three-round Swiss events, one of booster draft and one of Constructed - which so far has always been Modern. With eight players, there will be a clear winner that will go 3-0 in each event, the two of whom go to a final match in Constructed. In the event that the same player sweeps both events, they are immediately declared the winner. The rest of the players are ranked with normal Swiss calculation.

In 2024, the prize payout for third to sixth were flattened out, as there is a high probability that fourth and fifth have identical records.
