Magic Story is a weekly column on Magicthegathering.com. For several years it served as the primary source for in-depth story information. In that role, it replaced and was thought to have a much wider audience than the earlier print novels.[1][2] However, print novels were reintroduced in 2019, seemingly shifting the focus off of Magic Story to secondary plot lines again.[3]
Magic Story was previously titled Uncharted Realms, and was briefly known as Official Magic Fiction in the interim.[4][5] The name was changed in 2016 to help readers distinguish the column from the other, non-fiction articles on the official website.[6] A similar column, Savor the Flavor, ran until 2012, when the resources behind it were devoted to other tasks, including the then-new Uncharted Realms.[7] Some of the story arcs were published as e-books containing the Collected Stories of the respective set.
After five years of Magic Story showcasing the majority of Magic official fiction, printed novels once again returned to host the War of the Spark primary narrative, with the website instead hosting vignettes and side stories running parallel to the main events. The Gathering Storm was released as an online prequel novel afterward, via the Del Ray publisher website. Wizards of the Coast announced in July 2019 that the story of each set would be told through e-books rather than weekly episodic stories going forward, effectively closing the Magic Story site feature.[8]
After controversy around the quality of the released paper and e-books, Magic Story was reinstated for Zendikar Rising and subsequent sets.[9]
