Great Maha, also known as the Great-Night Owl[1], the Night Owl,[2] the Eclipse Owl,[3], and the Season of Long Night[4] is an antagonist on Bloomburrow in the Dragonstorm Arc. It is a major Calamity Beast.
Description[ | ]
Maha is enormous, its wingspan as broad as the branches of an oak tree. Deep blue and violet on its belly, breast, and wings transition to black-striped primary and tail feathers. Turquoise magic suffuses its beautiful, terrible form, lighting up its eyes and beak within the hollow of its face, and highlighting its deadly talons. In its wake, night follows, cutting across the sky to reveal star-flecked darkness beneath. The beast's movements are tranquil and silent, its passing marked only by the ensuing destruction and the chill wind of its wings.[5]
“ | We call it the Season of Long Night, whose wingspan brings darkness that blots out the sun from the sky, and in its wake, we can see the constellations of the night sky above and every night sky before it. Back in the ages of our ancestors, it was said that its talons sheared through the air and cut a permanent darkness into being. Its most recent rampage seemed to be on account of its missing egg. It seems even a Calamity can show parental affection. | ” |
Storyline[ | ]
Around 4564 AR, King Glarb of Fountainport hired the weaselfolk mercenary Cruelclaw to steal Maha's egg, hoping to gain control of a Calamity Beast.[6] This caused Maha to go on a rampage across Valley, resulting in the destruction of the village of Pondside and causing chaos and panic among the residing animalfolk. Debris caught fire, which spread to other buildings.[5] All that remained of Pondside were burnt and splintered ruins.[7]
After Mabel and her companions discovered Glarb stole the egg, they defeated him and his mercenaries, after which Dragonhawk and Maha appeared fighting each other. Mabel returned Maha's stolen egg to it, after which Maha ceased its rampage and departed peacefully.[6]
Inspiration[ | ]
Maha's name may come from Macha, an Irish goddess associated with The Morrígan. Notably, she appears in the movie Song of the Sea, where she is depicted as an owl.
