Marcois Jean-Jaquent was the vampire baron of Vernot, living on the island of Luneau on the plane of Ixalan.
Description[ | ]
Appearance[ | ]
Marcois Jean-Jaquent was a rangy man whose choreographed austerity was evident in his purposeful movements and simple cassock. His snake-like gaze, lidded and lazy yet piercing, captured attention with predatory intent.[1]
Baron Marcois had pale, velvet-like skin with deep hollows around his eyes, contrasting sharply with his lupine facial angles. His regal appearance was marred by unsettlingly affected mannerisms, as his smallest gestures felt rehearsed and inauthentic, like a mask concealing his true nature beneath a veneer of politeness and academic curiosity.[2]
Personality[ | ]
Calm and composed with an oratorical voice, Marcois commanded attention, yet his serene demeanor carried a quiet menace. He showed little regard for the suffering of creatures in the Royal Menagerie and Hall of Treasures, viewing their torment as entertainment for Luneau's elite. His interactions suggested superiority and detachment, marked by a slick, oily manner that belied deep ruthlessness.[1]
The baron was cunning and cruel, with intelligence and curiosity often manifesting in sadism. He preferred psychological and magical torture over physical pain, speaking with a cold, condescending tone. He took perverse pleasure in his victims' suffering and was relentless in pursuing knowledge, especially regarding the Arkbow and its mysterious powers.[2]
History[ | ]
During the horrific coliseum spectacle, Baron Marcois introduced and oversaw the torture of various animals, including a monstrosaur from Ixalan. The creature, once majestic, had been reduced to a pitiful state for the audience's amusement. Vivien, horrified, attempted to intervene. The Baron's chilling detachment became evident as he continued the show.[1]
When Vivien disrupted the proceedings with her magical creatures, chaos erupted. The Baron's reaction was one of clinical interest rather than panic. Confronted by Vivien, he maintained his calm demeanor, even under attack. His resilience and strength were almost supernatural.[1]
In the ensuing struggle, Baron Marcois overpowered Vivien, casually removing her daggers from his chest. His composed brutality and loyal guards ultimately subdued her, despite her fierce resistance.[1]
Baron Marcois met a grisly end due to his hubris. After numerous attempts to extract the secrets of the Arkbow from Vivien, he brought the artifact into a public setting, hoping to solidify his power. During a grotesque event, Vivien negotiated the Arkbow's return under the pretense of demonstrating its power.[2]
When a guard attempted to use the Arkbow, he was obliterated, confirming Vivien's claim that the artifact would not obey another hand.[3]
Unwilling to accept this, the Baron continued to press Vivien, but her power escalated the situation. Using her magic, Vivien transformed a spider into a monstrous size, causing chaos and disrupting the magical barrier. She then summoned the monstrosaur, which wreaked havoc on the ballroom.[3]
In a climactic confrontation, the Baron, armed with a sword, tried to fight the monstrosaur. Despite his agility and combat skills, he was no match for the creature's raw power. The monstrosaur caught him in its jaws, tearing his body apart in a gruesome display of strength and vengeance.[3]
