Minecraft is a 2011 digital sandbox game developed and published by Mojang Studios. With over 300 million units sold, Minecraft is the best-selling video game of all time.

Description[ | ]

In Minecraft, players explore a procedurally generated, three-dimensional world with virtually infinite terrain made up of voxels. Players can discover and extract raw materials, craft tools and items, and build structures, earthworks, and machines. Depending on their chosen game mode, players can fight hostile mobs, as well as cooperate with or compete against other players. The game has two main modes; one is survival mode, where players must acquire resources to survive and a creative mode where players have unlimited resources and the ability to fly. The game's large community also offers a wide variety of user-generated content, such as modifications, servers, skinss, texture packs, and custom maps, which add new game mechanics and possibilities.

Magic: The Gathering collabs[ | ]

Minecraft’s Markus Persson, aka “Notch”, designed a Magic: The Gathering card for Magic 2015 in 2014. Persson was the original creator and a primary developer of Minecraft in the game’s formative years, and the enchantment Aggressive Mining reflects the aesthetics of the game.

Minecraft returned the favor in 2017 with a collection of Magic-themed character skins for 490 Minecoins. These included Gideon, Jace, Liliana, Chandra, Nissa, Ajani, Nicol Bolas, Emrakul, Tezzeret, Samut, Saheeli, Tamiyo, Avacyn, Dovin Baan and Hazoret.[1]

In 2023, The Lost Caverns of Ixalan featured another Minecraft reference with Diamond Pick-Axe. This references a pickaxe variant that can be found within the various Minecraft games.[2] The design of an underground world being linked to the crafting of resources is a younger-generation perspective, of which Minecraft had a large influence.[3]
