The Mycotyrant is an elder fungus from Ixalan.[1]
Description[ | ]
The Mycotyrant's nexus was a giant, green, toadlike figure with purplish spots, a collar of mushroom gills around its neck, and two thick arms with vicious claws.[2] It had a large, lipless mouth filled with thornlike teeth and beady, glowing green eyes. It hung from a circular web of rootlike strands.
However, its true form is incorporeal, as the gestalt hive mind of the mycoid fungal network.[3][1] This mind thinks of itself as one titanic, world-spanning being with many parts; each mycoid, from the smallest spore to the largest primordium, is a vehicle for the Mycotyrant.[4]
The Mycotyrant prizes information, which it primarily gains via consumption, digestion, and replication.[1] Much of its growth is influenced by the creatures they encounter. This process has allowed mycoids to develop rudimentary systems of magic, tool creation, and weapons, though they are not without their own internally generated magic and technology.
History[ | ]
The Mycotyrant has existed beneath Ixalan's surface for an unknown but very long time, menacing the Komon Winaq people who lived in the caverns near the Core. Many centuries after the first exodus period, an outbreak struck one of the grandest cities of the Komon. Oltec scientists in the Core determined that this disease was fungal, spread by spores, and highly advanced—possibly some living relic of the Fomori, loosed outside of the Core in eons past.[1] This fungus was the beginning of the mycoids, parasitic fungi that infest living beings. The Mycotyrant believes assimilation to be favorable for its victims, as it increases their efficiency and joins their knowledge together; it does not seem to realize that it is killing them.[5]
After the mycoids wiped out the mining town of Sunray Bay, the pirates Malcolm Lee and Breeches ventured into the caverns to investigate. There, they encountered the Mycotyrant, who explained that it had assimilated the pirates that dug down to gain their knowledge. It then tried to assimilate the duo as well, but Malcolm used his hypnotic song to get away.
The Mycotyrant and its mycoids chased the pirates into the Core of Ixalan, where a battle was taking place between vampires under the control of Aclazotz and Sun Empire soldiers led by Huatli, alongside the native Oltec. The Oltec recognized the danger the Mycotyrant posed and fought it back with spirits. While its attention was diverted, Breeches managed to explode its nexus with a powerful firearm, causing its subordinate mycoids beneath the surface to wither and die.[5]
However, the Mycotyrant lived on, reaching the surface and taking over the town of Sunray Bay to replenish its followers.[5] Housed in a new body, it boarded a ship and sailed for the Brazen Coalition capital of High and Dry.
