Naiva (or Nai for short) was a human Atarka-clan warrior and experienced hunter in the past of Tarkir. She was the granddaughter of Yasova Dragonclaw, and the twin sister of Baishya.[1] The sisters had been born holding hands, when the midwife had cut open the belly of their dead mother. Atarka had killed their mother Kiarka because she was a Temur Whisperer.[2]
History[ | ]
When Baishya, who had shamanistic tendencies, felt the need to climb the holy mountain, the Eternal Ice, Naiva accompanied her sister to protect her against goblins. Together, they survived an avalanche and an attack by goblins. They met with Windfolk, who gave Baishya a vision of the birth of Ugin and the other Elder Dragons and told them to convey its message to their grandmother.
Realizing that the vision was sent by Ugin himself, the band of Yasova fled the Atarka dragons, who forbade shamanistic practices, and set out to find the Crucible of the Spirit Dragon. On their way, the met the Ghostfire Warrior Tae Jin, who shared Shu Yun's knowledge and additional visions of the origin of Ugin and Nicol Bolas.[3][4] Both Naiva and Baishya felt attracted to the handsome young man. Following the death of two Atarka and Ojutai broodlings, the hunting band was confronted by Atarka herself. They were only saved because Tae Jin had a vision of Nicol Bolas, and impressed Atarka with its tale.[5]
In their rivalry for Tae Jin's and their grandmother's attention, Naiva felt a growing resentment about her sister. This was aggravated by the manipulations of Nicol Bolas, who confronted them at Ugin's grave.[6] He offered her the reign of Tarkir, if only she would surrender her grandmother and her twin. She was tempted to comply.[7] Yasova saved her from Bolas' influence and tricked the elder dragon into thinking that Ugin's grave was targeted by the Immortal Sun to trap him away. This made Bolas flee Tarkir, and because of this Ugin's secret survival was never revealed to him.[8]
