Oana Vitellius I is a famous human arbiter of the Azorius guild on the plane of Ravnica, almost sixty years of age at the time of the running of the Implicit Maze. Her rise to glory was tinged with the hidden darkness of having made a deal with a Dimir agent to grant her the memories of her arbiter grandfather.
History[ | ]
When she was a young, freshly-appointed defender of the people in the Azorius courts, Oana lost a case adjudicated by arbiter Johvann III due to a technicality, which frustrated her thoroughly as she would have had a decent defense ready if she just had managed to be more prepared rather than rushing from court case to court case.
Ranting about her failure to nobody in particular while at a local bar, Oana was approached by the Dimir agent Tarem, who suspiciously offered her aid. Tarem was a notion thief, able to steal thoughts, memories, and experiences from both the living and the deceased. He offered Oana the opportunity to gain the memories of her deceased grandfather Otho Vitellius the II, in exchange for some service for the Dimir at a later point in time.
Although Oana agreed to this deal, Tarem altered her memories so that she would remember denying him. Thus, she built a guilt-free successful career as an Azorius defender, and later an arbiter, judge, and adjudicator of many significant cases, famously ensuring the defenders in her cases would have enough time spare to make proper defenses.
After thirty years of service, Oana returned to her home to find Tarem there waiting for her. Shockingly, he had not aged a single day since she saw him thirty years prior. Tarem revealed to Oana the truth - that she had accepted his deal and that she had no memory of this fact. However, when prompted, she could recall herself as a seven-year-old girl as seen through the eyes of her grandfather, which was proof of the deed.
Tarem asked Oana to falsify a judgment the following day, in the case of a Dimir agent who broke into an Izzet holding and stole something. The man was to be let go, despite his guilt. Oana refused Taram, however, breaking their deal, and fled.
The next day, she wrote and signed a letter of confession, her resignation, and abstainment from any future trials. She then went to contact one of her long-term trainees, as no matter what would happen going forward, she would need a good lawyer.
