Pantlaza is a raptor of the Sun Empire on Ixalan, companion of Huatli, and a leader among dinosaurs.

Description

Pantlaza is Huatli's young raptor companion, and as equal in stature to other dinosaurs as the warrior-poet is to the citizens of the Sun Empire. Loyal and intelligent, Pantlaza is infamously independent, a trait he brought to his partnership with Huatli. Unlike other companions she's had, Huatli doesn't control Pantlaza; instead, they work together as equals to lead humans and dinosaurs in battle and toward peace. Pantlaza works his best with other agile dinosaurs as scouts and rangers on long-range missions, independent of any human handling. He is as tall as a human, covered in bright feathers, and has sharp talons. He makes a sound between a growl and a screech.

Gender

In Episode 4 of The Lost Caverns of Ixalan, Pantlaza originally was described as female. In all other episodes, however, as well as its Commander insert, the dinosaur was referred to as male. This was later amended in Episode 4.

History

Pantlaza chose Huatli as a packmate, coming to her after the opening of Orazca in 4560 AR to pledge his service and loyalty. During the Phyrexian Invasion in 4562, Pantlaza served alongside Huatli's company of lancers with his own company of raptors, acting as a vanguard to harry, flank, and disrupt Phyrexian columns.

The following year, Pantlaza joined Huatli, Quintorius Kand, and twenty Sun Empire warriors in an expedition to Ixalan's Core. He helped Huatli to kill the transformed vampire Vito Quijano de Pasamonte.

Inspiration

Pantlaza is a Nahuatl word meaning "discovery." It was likely chosen to match Pantlaza's ability.
