Pitre was a thatcher and a would-be vampire slayer from Hanweir on the plane of Innistrad.
History[ | ]
Pitre, a simple thatcher, was a tall, unassuming man known more for his humble appearance and dim-witted nature than for any notable feats of strength or intellect. Despite these perceptions, Pitre had a kind and earnest personality, deeply in love with Lorelei, the daughter of the mayor, Jurgen Garensun. This love, however, was unreciprocated by Lorelei's father, who viewed Pitre as unworthy and a buffoon.
Pitre’s life took a dramatic turn when he killed a vampire, albeit a young and unsuspecting one, and was mistakenly hailed as a town hero in Hanweir. Unable to cope with the false accolades and driven by a need to prove his worth truly, Pitre left Hanweir for Erdwal to hunt a real vampire. His journey was fraught with challenges; he was robbed upon arrival, took refuge in a church, and was trained to become a genuine vampire hunter by a crazed priest.
Despite his determination and the support of the church, Pitre's quest ended in tragedy. He faced Thatu Reiniger, a powerful vampire lord, and realized he was outmatched. Ultimately, Pitre was fatally wounded by Thatu and returned to Hanweir, where he died, his body still bleeding from the cursed wound. In a desperate act to prevent his potential transformation into a vampire, Lorelei beheaded him, a deed that left her seeking solace in the church. Pitre's tragic end left a lasting curse on Hanweir, turning his once simple life into a tale of sorrow and unintended heroism. The townsfolk attempted to bury Pitre to stop the bleeding curse, but the blood kept running long after his death, filling his coffin and soaking through the earth in an expanding circle, causing Hanweir to announce an alert that its citizens should stay inside and pray to remove the curse.
It is unknown what would have happened if Raben Amsel did not stop by, looking for the cursed blade. He ordered Pitre's corpse exhumed, much to the horror of Hanweir's citizens. Amsel ended the curse on Pitre's corpse by burning it.
