Story[]

Daria is still stuck in the Amber Prison on the Null Moon, but her powers are such that she can still project her mind outside of her prison. In this manner, she sees various scenes playing out on Corondor while searching for Taysir. First, she sees Jared Carthalion and Sandruu dueling in the ruins of Castle Melmereth. The Elder Druid of Corondor had sent Jared there, as its vault contains the spellbook of Geyadrone Dihada, and summoning Dakkon Blackblade would be a tremendous aide to the cause of Corondor. Unfortunately, Jared is intercepted by the raging minotaur, distraught over the perceived notion that Jared is taking advantage of his former lover, Kristina of the Woods. Still, Jared manages to evade Sandruu long enough to escape with the spellbook.

Next, Daria sees Ravidel conquering the city of Shikar in eastern Corondor. Upon completing this task, Ravidel pulls out a device, which includes the piece of obsidian he took from Urborg while failing to convince Windgrace to participate on his side in the war. He matches this obsidian stone with four others of blue, white, green, and red coloration, and uses them to hinder the casting abilities of the other summoned planeswalkers.

Meanwhile, Grenfell Mor is in the Bridge City of Telemar, which has been taken over by Tevesh Szat. Szat feels his powers suddenly reduced by Ravidel's spell and takes it out on Grenfell. Rummaging through his mind, Szat discovers that there are five houses of Corondor - Severin of the blue, Verdenth of the green, Carthalion of the red, Khone of the black, and Kadesha of the white. Each House kept a bit of an artifact called the Grey Chime. This chime is an artifact of ultimate destruction, ideal to claim for the would-be harbinger of the apocalypse, Szat. Szat heads away from Telemar to collect the five pieces of the chime.

Far away on Teferi's Isle, Leshrac is talking with the time-mage Teferi. The Walker of Night tries to recruit Teferi against Taysir, but Teferi refuses. Leshrac then steals some artifacts and spells from the island, ensuring that his visit is not a waste of time. Teferi secretly follows Leshrac to the Sulgh Swamps on Corondor, where he summons Caliphear. Teferi sends the Nightmare to Freyalise, to tell her that she cannot focus solely on Tevesh Szat, nor can she stay neutral in the conflict between Ravidel and Jared.

Finally, Daria locates Taysir. He has followed the Mox Beacon to Corondor and immediately sought out his former lover Kristina, despite his earlier promises to the Anaba that rehabilitated him. The reunion between Taysir and Kristina was not a happy one, as the two are now locked in a duel. Then Jared arrives with Dihada's spellbook, with Sandruu in hot pursuit. Realizing that Kristina has taken yet another lover, Taysir flees, hurt and confused. Kristina then convinces Sandruu that Jared is not using her, and the minotaur relaxes a little, willing to talk. Sandruu having seen Taysir, the man who once exiled him because he was obsessed with Kristina, made him reflect on his obsessive love of her. He and Kristina decide to settle on following Taysir and speaking with him, while Jared is left on his own.

Jared is then assaulted by Tevesh Szat, who quickly defeats him and steals his Red Mana Battery, the energy source for the Grey Chime. Szat also steals a marble dial, the piece of the Chime that House Kadesha was keeping, before he leaves. Jared wonders why Szat only attacked him for the Battery but is interrupted again when Ravidel turns up in his daughter's nursery, Justina. Ravidel tries to recruit Jared for his crusade to eliminate all the other planeswalkers, which he frames as seeking out justice in the name of Taysir, but Jared is not convinced. Ravidel then just leaves, leaving Justina unharmed.

Soon part of Ravidel's army attacks Hamath, Jared's headquarters since the birth of his daughter, but the city is well defended. Jared is still there, and the Elder Druid of Corondor has just summoned an eager-for-battle Dakkon Blackblade. During the fighting, both Freyalise and Caliphear also turn up. Freyalise has chosen to side with Jared to repay her debt to the Carthalions of old, Jason and Jauehl. Thus, Ravidel's initial attack on Hamath is repulsed.

Another part of Ravidel's army is still assaulting Shikar, which is protected by Eskil and the Ash Warlord Embereck, who have remained together after their initial encounter, despite not getting along. Leshrac then appears and convinces Embereck to take on Ravidel directly, leaving Eskil to defend the city on his own. Eventually, the Elder Druid and Teferi both arrive to help out, but by then it is too late, and the three can do little more than help the citizens escape alive. Ravidel himself then turns up and kills the Elder Druid. Jared feels the death of Elder Druid immediately, given his crescent birthmark. Kristina teleports to his side and they talk about Jared's fear of being left alone. She promises not to leave him anymore.

Embereck and Leshrac confront Ravidel, but with their powers hampered by Ravidel's spell, they do not fare well. The weakened Embereck is destroyed, and Leshrac is forced to flee. Ravidel gives a rallying speech, only to be confronted by his former mentor Taysir. Initially ecstatic to see his mentor again, Ravidel is horrified when Taysir tells him he does not approve of the war orchestrated in his name. The maddened Ravidel only sees this as yet another betrayal against him, analogous to the betrayal of his previous mentor, Faralyn. He decides Taysir is just one more planeswalker who needs to be slain and launches a fierce attack against him. Taysir nearly falls to his former apprentice but is saved by Teferi.

Leshrac has fled to Telemar, where he learns that Szat has collected four of the five pieces of the Grey Chime. Grenfell Mor has gone completely insane at this point and presents Szat with the final part of the Chime. On the Null Moon Daria is panicking, as she is the only one who seems aware of the danger of the Chime. She casts her consciousness out again, and luckily the blind Eskil can sense her. Eskil heads off to Hamath to tell Jared's camp of Szat's plans after pointing Daria's consciousness to Taysir's location. Daria finds her father somewhere in the space between planes, just in time to see Teferi trying to give him a morale boost. After seeing Kristina with Jared and being confronted with an enraged Sandruu, as well as his protegé Ravidel, having gone insane and murderous, in addition to Daria being missing has burned the old man out. However, after some comfort and lively humor, Teferi manages to get Taysir out of his dark mood, and the two join return to Corondor.

As Ravidel's forces start amassing for their second attack on Hamath, a war council is held inside. In the end, it is decided that Taysir and Caliphaer will go to destroy the Mox Beacon. Taysir does not want to face Ravidel again, fearing he could not deliver a killing blow out of pity. Kristina, Sandruu, and Freyalise will take on Szat and his Grey Chime. Jared and Dakkon will join the mortal defenders of Corondor, represented at the council by Yorgo, Visionary Kadesha, and exarchs Amadis and Finovar, and together they will confront Ravidel on the battlefield. Kristina does not like breaking her promise to Jared about always staying with him, but he tells her to go.

Teferi sets up a trap for Ravidel by telling Jared to summon the Force of Nature he met in the White Woods. Teferi then immediately phases the Force out, so that it will have the chance for a surprise attack. Teferi then heads away on some other errand. Eskil, still a pacifist, does not participate in any fighting.

Taysir and Caliphear discover they cannot disenchant or shatter the Beacon and have to deal with some kind of monster Ravidel put in place to defend it. After they defeat it, they inspect the Moxen and discover that they are in fact Thran powerstones. Taysir also realizes they are powered by entire worlds that are contained within them. From his studies, Taysir knows of the link between Phyrexia and the Thran and opens a doorway to the Hell of Artifice. Numerous Phyrexian gremlin rush out and grab the Beaco, then haul it over to Phyrexia to destroy it.

In Telemar City, Kristina duels Leshrac and Grenfell Mor. Grenfell nearly kills Kristina with a spell but is then disintegrated by Sandruu. Freyalise faces off against Szat once again and manages to separate him from the assembled Chime. Unfortunately, the first 'walker to stumble upon the Chime is Leshrac. Now free to leave Dominaria since the Mox Beacon is destroyed, Leshrac decides to activate the Chime.

Meanwhile, Ravidel's army is attacking Hamath again. Jared challenges the Battlemage, while Dakkon leads the defenders' troops. On the opposing side, he sees a familiar face: Sol'Kanar, now freed from Freyalise's bindings and working for Ravidel.

As Leshrac is about the ring the Chime, Kristina finds him and makes a grab for it. She yells to Sandruu and Freyalise to leave, which they do, just in time. Leshrac rings the chime just as Kristina yanks it from his hands, and Telemar goes up in a mushroom cloud. Kristina, Leshrac, and Szat are lost in the darkness of the spell, although Kristina can planeswalk the chime away in the nick of time. Exactly what happens to Szat and Leshrac in the blast is unknown, but given their appearances later, they both do survive.

Jared, like with the death of the Elder Druid, immediately feels Kristina's absence. Thinking her dead, he launches into a charge against Ravidel but then realizes his opponent is standing right in Teferi's trap. Just as the sky starts changing colors thanks to the destruction wrought by the Grey Chime, the Force of Nature suddenly phases back in and grabs Ravidel. The battlemage tries to summon a Personal Incarnation to fight the force, but the chaotic effects of the Chime thwart his spell and cause another explosion, much closer this time. The earth around Ravidel collapses, and he falls. For a moment, Jared is ready to let himself be swallowed by the ground as well, but the thought of his newborn daughter rouses him out of his dark thoughts. Even so, he still almost dies, and only Taysir and Caliphear turning up and rescuing him keep him from being swallowed by the giant sinkhole opening up beneath Hamath. Ravidel is not seen again and Dakkon routs his ground forces.

As the remainder of the planeswalkers gather, Sandruu and Freyalise talk of how they witnessed Kristina die. In response, Jared flies into a rage against planeswalkerhood. He shouts that if such is the price of planeswalking, he rejects it. Then a hand appears on his shoulder. It's Kristina, still alive, who says she would not mind spending some time away from planeswalkers as well. She planeswalked away just as the Chime exploded, resulting in it partially exploding on Dominaria and partially in the space between worlds. Kristina is badly burned from the damage, and her planeswalker spark is now missing.

In the wrap-up, Taysir admits to his earlier errors and is forgiven by Sandruu. Freyalise offers to aid Eskil in helping rebuild the White Woods and Shikar. His errand complete, Teferi retrieves the Amber Prison from the Null Moon and Eskil releases Daria from it. Jared acknowledges his destiny and becomes the next Elder Druid, willingly giving up his planeswalkerhood. He and Kristina start a mortal life with their daughter in Kristina's Woods, with Dakkon watching over them as their protector. The sky over Corondor however, even years later, is still strangely colored, a legacy of the Grey Chime.[1]

The story of the Planeswalker War was intended to be continued in a canceled PC RPG named Rise of the Mana Wraith.
