Point counters are a type of counter introduced in Strixhaven: School of Mages. They act as a tracking mechanism for game related actions.

Description[ | ]

Cards that use point counters thematically represent the back-and-forth of a sports game where points are gained or lost.

Point counters first appeared on the Strixhaven Stadium in Strixhaven: School of Mages. It is an artifact with an activated ability to add 1 colorless mana and a point counter on the artifact. If a creature deals combat damage to the player then a point counter is removed and whenever a creature the player controls deals damage another point counter is added to it. If the artifact reaches 10 or more counters then the player who was dealt damage and caused the last counter to be added loses the game.

The Lost Caverns of Ixalan used point counters on Contested Game Ball; a similarly sport themed card. Rather than being used as an alternate lose condition, it is used to track who "wins" the prize of a Treasure token.

The 2024 Las Vegas Planechase Unknown featured the counters on Raider's Allegiance which was a plane card that got one of them during the second main phase for each other player that was dealt damage to. Then whenever it was planeswalked away from, the player with the most point counters got three treasure tokens and removed all the counters.
